My Australian Sheppard six month old puppy died(October 7, 2009) from parvo and i wanted to know how long can a another puppy. I really want another dog like around Christmas time and i was wondering if that is long enough. We disinfected the house with bleach and some kind of lemon scented to kill bacteria and later this weekend we will bleach the backyard.

    • It should be fine to get another dog around christmas. The thing about parvo is that you can get it just by walking down the street. You need to get your dog its parvo shots as a puppy so you wont have to worry about parvo.

    • The next dog that you bring into the house should have at least two parvo vaccinations. Parvo is a very long lived virus. Once it's on your place, it's very hard to eradicate especially in soils. So you need to make sure that your next puppy is properly vaccinated against this nasty disease.

    • Since you did not properly vaccinate the first puppy, I do not think you should have another puppy.Vaccines still cost money as does proper vet care.I think the best thing for you would be to volunteer at a shelter so you can be around dogs.Really in this day and age there is NO reason a dog should get Parvo, except negligence.

    • my best advise would be1) get a dod older than 4months2) get the dog or puppy all its shots b4 u bring them home3) Just wait till next christmas to get onethe problem with this is that the parvo virus lives for a long time 9months to 2yrs in places. you could have cleaned the yard and floor but what about carpets, charis, and other stuffs u can't bleach. people can carry the virus on their shoes etc though it doesn't affect humans but it could be under the shoes or on carpet and chairs. the virus affects mostly younger dogs from 2wks-2yrs. just get all 3 rounds of vaccination and talk to ur vet about it b4 u bring the new dog home

    • Oh, I am so sorry! I have lost pets before and it is hard. If you are thinking of getting another dog, make sure you disinfect everything first. It sounds like you are doing a good job so far but I researched a little and it says to prevent the spread of this disease you should use a 1:30 ratio of chlorine bleach and water to clean bowls and food dishes (although I would just get new ones). Wash the bedding the dog has been in a contact with in this same bleach solution and hot water. Use it on your yard too. It might kill the grass but its better than your next dog. Be careful when using it on carpet! This virus can live up to 6 months so I would wait at least that long before you got another dog. There is a web address at the bottom, it is REALLY helpful. I got my info from it. I'd research a little more on it. I hope I helped! :)

    • Do not keep any toys, bowls, or bedding from the other puppy. Sounds like you disinfected everything, which is good. I hate to say it, but I wouldn't get one for Christmas. Rule of thumb is keep disinfecting and wait at LEAST 6 months. The other thing I suggest is getting a dog that has 3 of the parvo vaccine. So around 4 months old. We had a client who had a puppy that died from parvo, and bought another puppy 2 months later against our advice that also died of parvo. It is a vicious virus that you don't want to mess with.

    • i had another pup 2 weeks after my pup was given the all clear...i made sure i cleaned the place where the pup was kept real good with bleach water and sprayed the yard...just make sure a vet gives the next pup one shot before bring it in the house...gypsy is 5 years old now...i took a bought a pup that had parvo kept it seperated from my other dogs in the basement...found out 6 hours later it had parvo....it was never around my dogs or the 6 pups i had..returned it to the breeder and got my money back....
