I really want to adopt a rescue dog, but my parents have an issue as they think all dogs smell and have bad breath and make a mess. I have tried to explain that there are products such as dental chews available and that i would bath it often and that not all dogs have thick dense smelly fur and that i would opt for a slightly older dog say 2-4 yrs old instead of a puppy so it would probablly not chew up the house and may be house-trained. What else can I do to persuade them?

    • Its not about persuasion, its about showing that you are responsible enough to care for the dog. Get some solid information together on products you would use for maintaining the dogs health. Do your research on crate training - which would ease your parents fears about the dog tearing things up or urinating all over the house. Or make a plan of where the dog would be allowed - if there is a way to block off the house so the dog was only allowed in your room & the hallway & kitchen or something. Maybe if some of your friends have dogs you could bring them over to show your parents that not all dogs smell...Good luck!

    • Do they have any other reasons? Like cost or worry about responsibility? Smell and mess are good points and you can't bathe a dog too often or you'll dry out it's skin. An older dog probably WOULD be potty trained and past the teething stage. But there is a chance that you would have to re-potty train or re-visit the training because in a shelter they don't usually bring the dogs outside to potty, or they rescued the dog as an outside dog - therefor they would need to be potty trained. And all dogs chew and an older dog could possibly chew a few things around the house or get ahold of things - the solution to that is to keep the house sparkling clean (your mom might like that part) and provide toys for the dog to chew on.You could try to adopt a dog from a breed specific rescue group. Most of those dogs tend to be housed in a home (fostered) with people and usually WILL be potty trained. Some shelters also foster their dogs.I would print out articles on potty training to show your mom that you are willing to clean up messes and train the dog. Do the same for those dental chews. Find breeds that are short furred and show your mom those. Find out if your parents have any other objections - allergies, cost, responsibility, etc.

    • You do things like.Clean your room and KEEP it clean.Sweep the floor.Do your homework on time.Get good grades.Don't fight with your brothers and sisters.Don't talk back to adults.Eat what your parents give you and don''t make any faces about it.Remember to share.Do research on taking care of a dog and what breed of dog you want.Ask them nicely and don't whine or beg when you talk about getting a new pet.

    • You should show that you are responsible enough to look after something properly first. Start with a fish or maybe a rodent and really look after it well. Dont beg or throw a tantrum because that will just show your parents how inmature you can be. Maybe later on in your life they will you respect you as a responsibe person and let you have the dog of your dreams!Good Luck!
