The dog we adopted from the pound gets a little wound up around other animals. Some animals (ones that don't act submissive) brings out very aggressive behavior in my dog. Other dogs he is okay with, but plays fairly rough. When he watches other dogs play he wags his tail and starts whining...which makes me feel as though he wants to play as well (I might be wrong about that.) The point is we were considering getting another companion from the pound, but are very worried that one of them will get hurt. Is it best just to have an "only child?"Or would it be okay to adopt another? If it seems okay, are there any suggestions to making sure everyone gets along and none get injured?

    • Sounds like you need to spend more time working on your current dog's issues before committing to another dog. A companion for your pooch may not be the solution to his problems, and may antagonise things further. Have you consulted a dog behavioural specialist?

    • It may help to bring home a puppy. Something that will grow up around your dog. I feel like your dog might get agressive with another adult canine. You need to be prepared to break up any fights, and keep a close eye on your puppy the first couple days (if you get one). Make the puppy yours. By using your body language and voice, you need to let your dog know that the puppy is YOURS, therefore he can't harm it. And if he does try to harm it, there will be consequences.

    • Dogs are pack animals by nature. So yes, another dog would be a good thing but only if you control the behavior of your current animal. If your dog is aggressive towards any other animals you need to correct that behavior now. If you elect to bring another dog into your home, you have to be certain you can control your first child. If you don't establish control, there is potential for real danger especially if the dog you bring home is naturally dominant too.

    • Good question! Its been my experience two are GREAT!! Not only for them...but us:) I find dogs really have a way of working themselves out. If you ever get a chance to read Cesar(the dog whisperer) book....GET IT....will help you. Dogs when put together form a pack. There is a pack leader(YOU) and then the others(DOGS) will get in line depending where they fall in the pack....TRUST the process. Hope this helps. Sure helped me.
