I have a short haired gsd x and just before summer, there is just hair everywhere. Any other time and it's no bother at all. When she's shedding, she gets a bath every 2-3 weeks and I get her with a wire brush every second day.It didn't stop the problem but it ment i didn't have to vacuum every day.
Older dogs' coats aren't in as good a condition as when they were younger because they don't distribute the oils as well as they used to. Grooming her thoroughly every day will not only remove dead hair, it'll help distribute her natural oils. Also, make sure she's on a good diet. You might want to try either giving her a salmon oil capsule or a tablespoon of either olive or vegetable oil on her food daily to improve her coat condition. And those "no shed" shampoos are a gimmick, save your money, they don't work.
Brush daily. The hair in the brush is hair not on your floor & elsewhere. You can try adding oil to the diet like fish oil capsules. It may be now that she is elderly, she is losing more hair due to thyroid & skin not functioning as well as it used to. Be sure to mention to the vet about hair loss, they might need to run bloodwork & make sure something isn't going on internally.
