    • Well, the point of a toothpaste is adding friction to it. You don't have to use toothpaste, but it really helps. If you don't want a pet-specific paste, just use plain baking soda.

    • It certainly would help, although no amount of brushing will prevent all tartar build-up especially if your dog is one of the smaller breeds. Give him a bone to chew on occasionally but keep your eye on the back teeth where most of the tartar accumulates.

    • If you are going to make the effort to brush your dog's teeth, I would get him some dog toothpaste. Enzymatic tooth paste is great because it doesn't rely as much on the physical removal of plaque by scrubbing. Instead you apply the paste and the enzymes work to remove plaque.I also would feed Greenies daily. Greenies are a treat with a soft texture which allows the dog's teeth to penetrate into the brush shape and scrapes the tooth clean. This creates a 360 degree clean as opposed to cleaning the chewing surface that you get from other harder treats like chew sticks. Plus the treat is made out of nutritious and breath freshening ingredients like chlorophyll. Greenies are recognized by the independent Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) for being effective at removing plaque and tartar build up.Hope that helps :)OliviaPet Nutrition SpecialistNutro
