I haven't really been able to find anything online about this, does it even exist? Or are all protection-trained dogs trained with "traditional", physically forceful methods? Also, does protection training drastically change a dog's personality? Most dogs that I have met that have been protection trained seem to be overly serious all the time, if that makes sense. I have a boxer and I would hate to have her lose her "goofyness" if I decided to have her protection trained.

    • I Think you should use force or power like when he bits you you just can't shout at him he will not know what he did then you mist hit his mouth then if you want your dog to be trained. All dogs are protective to their owners if your dog are just newly bought or just new as the time passes if he became close to you if an unfamiliar face comes he will think it's an intruder so let the time do the job.

    • Sure sure sure it's possible to teach your dog anything without force, please give your dog a fat juicy bone and a glass of worm milk and set her in front of your T.V set to watch Dog whisperer by Cessar Millan . Lol

    • A Boxer should NEVER be used in "protection" training, which I assume you mean Schutzhund training. They're not the right dogs for that kind of work, they are super friendly, goofy dogs. They don't have the right temperament, or personality for such. Info about "Protection" training: http://leerburg.com/articles.htm#protI found some links on Schutzhund you might want to go through...http://leerburg.com/schutzhund.htmhttp://germanshepherddog.com/schutzhund/index.htmhttp://leerburg.com/articles.htm

    • The ONLY dogs that should ever be trained for protection are temperament assessed totally stable secure dogs. They should also ONLY be trained by a total professional costing thousands.Anything less than that is just an accident waiting to happen. So not sure what you would mean by "most dogs I have met that have been protection trained" but most of us in the dog world, would meet very very few in a lifetime. If you mean schutzhund training which is considered a sport then there are many aspects of that before getting to sleeve work anyway and any dog is assessed on the way through to see if if is suitable. If you've ever come across a strong breed like a rottie that tries to grab arms to play like I have, where some idiot has tried to do some DIY or cowboy training on the dog, it is not funny. These dogs are not in control and most definitely can very quickly go over the top into a serious problem. Not something to fool around with.

    • 1. You don't get reliable dogs without compulsion2. If you meat ANY working dog that has been trained they are serious when in work mode. That's their temperament3. And unless you have a REAL need for a PPD why waste that much money on a dog who's temperament may not be suitable for the job?
