I have a pit and my friends tell me that they're one of the top dogs stolen. I was thinking about getting the puppy microchipped next week and is the chip able to locate a stolen dog? I know it contains a unique id for her in case she is found by a shelter or something and they can scan it and call the company to tell me that they've found the dog. But what if some really determined theives actually came and stole her will the chip help?

    • Only if whoever finds your dog takes him to a shelter or Vet to get him scanned for the chip. If someone steals your dog, no you won't be able to find him, unless they turn him in, which is unlikely.

    • I microchipped my pets and all it does is if they are lost and the animal shelter/vet gets them they are able to find out your address and phone number i dont think it can locate where a stole dog is sorry. i would get them chipped in case they get losts. Good Luck

    • Yes it can. You could either put it on the collar, or you can put it underneath the dogs skin. But I would go for the color. It is very popular now and days. It has helped a few of my friends locate their dogs also.

    • The chip won't allow you to track her. and if the dog was never scanned, the chip won't return your dog to you. But if someone finds your dog and wants to find it's proper owner, the chip will help return your dog to you.

    • It would just have info regarding your address and phone..no GPS locater in that chip....Only if someone took her to a vet or whatnot to see if she has been chipped.however.....I just read a study that states that those microchips have been linked to cancer in pets...I don't have a link to give you, but I have two puppies that I am NOT doing for just this reason...please look into that first, before microchiping her.

    • It doesn't work like a GPS tracker in your cell phone or car- all it is, is a chip that has your contact information on it. If the dog gets picked up or dropped off at a vet or a shelter as an unknown, they will scan the dog to see if there is a chip, and that's how the dog gets back to you. If it's stolen, then no, the chip is not worth it.

    • No, it's not like a GPS tracking device, the chip will prove that she's yours if she's found, or taken to a pound...but if she's stolen, its not like you can activate it, and have her located like a lo-jack..Sorry,

    • yes because if the dog is stolen the company can probably put it in their system so when a vet scans the dog it will show up and they can return the dog. the great thing about it is, even a theif wouldn't know that the dog is microchipped. they do give you a tag but anyone could rip that off, but they always have the chip in them. but remember always keep her on a leash and near by, make sure she always comes to you when called. with a chip, the percentage of dogs returned is way higher than dogs without. i was also watching a show in tv about tips if a person in a park is really interested in your dog and what to say. They said to talk your dog down, like just say things that a person really wouldn't be interested in, like its fixed or has some kind of disease, just stuff that would totally turn a person away from it. that way they are less likely to want to take the dog.

    • The chips commonly inserted into dogs for identification purposes contain info that will help locate the owner IF the dog is SCANNED for a chip at a shelter or facility that reads the chip in your dog. They are not gps tracking systems.I don't know that any implantable gps device is on the market yet. There are gps devices that can be put on a collar, but if the collar is removed, the contact is lost.If you are going to get your dog chipped, get both types inserted. There is some concern that implanted chips can cause cancer. I didn't hear about this until after my dogs were chipped. Read about it and decide what you want to do.Getting the internationally read chip and the American (mostly) read chip will enable your dog to have a better chance of being reunited with you, the owner. If your dog does end up at a shelter or animal control or an individual takes the dog in as a stray to a Vet clinic, and they have scanners to read chips, it can indeed be something to reunite you with your dog. If your dog has one kind of chip only, and the scanner reads another kind of chip, then it will not pick up the info to I.D. your dog.http://www.billfoundation.org/news/doggie_gps.html

    • my westie was stolen when he was 12 weeks, he wasnt micro chipped, we got him back after 3 days thanks to the local paper, as soon as we got him back we had him micro chipped, and we were told if he was stolen again, n he was sold on n the new owners tryed to get him chipped then they have 2 scan 2 see if he has already got a chip n they would b able 2 find out if it was our dog, (if that makes sence)

    • No the chip probably won't help if shes stolen, unless shes stolen to be sold on again but unfortunately most pits are stolen to be used as fighting or bait dogs in which case it won't help. There are gps tracking devices that can be fitted into collars, if she strays you should find her with one of those but they are very expensive, and if shes stolen, the thieves will just take the collar off anyways, heres a few links about them:http://www.gps-practice-and-fun.com/gps-pet-tracking.htmlhttp://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qn4176/is_20071217/ai_n21165585http://www.animalark.us/portal/Pet-Tracking-Technology.htmlhttp://www.bigpawsonly.com/Geo-fencing-GPS-Collars-health.htmI would still get her microchipped anyways and maybe even tattooed, and if your really worried about her going walkies on her own accord get a gps collar, but these will not locate a stolen dog.Heres a few links for preventing your dog from being stolen:http://www.directline.com/pet/dog_theft.htmhttp://www.yourspca.org/site/News2?page=NewsArticle&id=6213http://www.inch.com/~dogs/stolen.html
