What does a pregnant tick look like?

Please give detailed information. Our dog had an engorged tick on it's ear, but it fell off. We left it in a jar, and we are wondering to see if it is pregnant... And we live in Maryland, so what kind of diseases can our dog get? Should we treat it right…

    • Yes I think you should have him checked by the vet. The tick being engorged I believe not that its pregnant but its the blood its been sucking from your dog.

    • Heres the deal with ticks. Only the females engorge with blood. She may or may not be pregnant depending on if there were any males around her after she attached to the dog. A female tick attaches and feeds in preparation for egg laying, the males gather around her and stay small. Usually when you see an engorged tick on a dog, there are several small ones around her (they are the males) Theres really no way to know if she was ever fertilized unless you just wait and see.As for seeing a vet, most people do not take their animals to the vet for one tick bite. You need to put some antibiotic ointment (neosporin) on the area for a couple of days, and watch for redness or swelling. Save the tick (alive or dead) and mark the date you removed it on the calender. If your dog shows signs of sickness (not eating/drinking or acting lethargic) in the next month, then take her/him to the vet, and take the tick with you for testing. They can get paralysis (rare) lyme disease, rocky mountain spotted fever , or just plain infection from a tick bite, but they usually are just fine.
