How long does it take for a butterfly to emerge from its cocoon?

My children caught catepillars, made a "habitat" for them, and then the catepillars formed cocoons. But it's been a while, and I am wondering if anything is going to emerge?

Well, make sure the cage wasn't jarred or shaken. Some types take longer than others. Just keep waiting.

I depends on the type of butterflies, just like every other organism out there everything has its own cycle of growth.
