At 6 mos he is producing sperm, and could impregnate a female if the time is right. He should be neutered. You would protect him from many health issues, including prostate cancer.
now. Get him neutered before he runs off. Or creates puppies. If you wanna breed him you shouldnt because any good breeder would know that 6months is right time. Anyways your choice is your choice.
If you're talking about studding, I believe it's about 2 years old. I looked into studding my male boxer and the responses I got from pros was 2, but Labs may be different.
