Dog trainer insists he shouldn't chew on an old chew as he may ingest parts of it and end up at the vet. Our puppy chews apart most stuffed toys, etc. and I'm sure he swallows some of that too.

As far as I know, it shouldn't be harmful. Puppies chew on pretty much whatever they can get their teeth on. When it starts really falling apart and is in a million little pieces, you might want to take it away.
