What to do if you think your dog has heartworms?

I think my 9yr. old lab has heartworms this morning she wouldn't eat or drink, her ribcage area is swollen and I think shes been coughing. Shes been looseing weight resently and much of her energy but I thought it might be the heat. I live very far away from a vet so its very hard to go to one or get one to come out. She seems to be feeling better this afternoon but I'm not sure what to do and I hate to see her suffer, Any advice?I'm 15, can't drive and I stuck on a ranch in the middle of nowhere, my parents are on vacation and The guy that helps watch the ranch went in town early this mornin and won't be back til late. I can't carry her to the nearest vet cuz she' d probably be dead before we got there. shes my step-dads, and shes an old hunting dog and were on 5000 acers so its hard to keep a close eye on every little thing she does. So I'm really sorry I 'm being such a bad dog owner.

PetSmart has a vet in their store if there's one close to you...otherwise, search for closer vets.

TAKE HER TO THE VET IMMEDIATELY! A little bit of a day trip won't kill you, and it may save your dog's life.

You need to find someone who can get the two of you to the vet. Call a vet and explain the symptoms and ask if they'll let you pay it out. Some will. Heart worms will kill your dog and if you give her over the counter heart worm medication after she already has them, that can kill her too. She really, really needs to be seen by a vet. Sorry to say it, but if your dog does have heartworms and doesn't get treatment, she will die. Sounds serious even if it is something else. You can't help her without taking her to the vet. I hope things work out for you.
