How can I prevent dog from coughing hairballs?

My dog is 10 yrs. old and just started coughing up; what remedy can i use to prevent this from occuring. Is there any dog food that prevents this from happening?

Hairballs aren't very common in dogs, so there's a good chance that something else is going on, particularly at this age. You should take him to the vet for a full workup

Groom him every day and there won't be any hair to chew.

I have never heard of a dog getting hairballs, there could be other reasons for the coughing. I would get it checked by a vet.
