We have a 3 year old golden retriever that we are having problems walking on a lead. We have tried a Halti that did work but she didnt really like it. If we offer our dog a treat we have her attention for a while but she loses interest if we dont give it to her quite quickly. The main problem is that she can be walking quite nicely but then if she smells something interesting she will stop which is beginning to hurt my arm. How can I keep my dog interested enough so she doesnt pull or stop while on the lead?P.S We have taken her to classes when she was younger and didnt have a problem when in the class and is very good with other commands such as sit, leave, stay and recall.

    • A dogs nose is very sensitive, they can smell things we don;t know exist. It is there way of recognizing stuff, or getting to know something new. Even in their own environment they still do it. Its their nature. they will not stop

    • u cant stop that. that is a dog's natural habit and treats wont work so im afraid u'll just have to live with it.best use a fishing rod tie to a treat and raise it infront of ur dog so that it follows it

    • My dog knows when we're going on a sniffing walk or not. When we're not, I give the HEAL command and that's when he knows he needs to stay right by my side - of course, he'll occasionally get distracted when healing, so that's why we have a choke collar, one little tug and he's refocused. But please remember dogs need that sniffing time too, it's enjoyable for them.

    • Try jerking on the leash once and telling her to come. If it doesn't work the first time try again until she obeys, but only up to a maximum of 3 times, after that they tune you out, like children, and you could be there all day.If she still doesn't come then go break her concentration and continue your walk. If she comes to you give her a lot of praise, continue your walk and the next time she starts starts to go to an interesting area jerk on the leash, say come and keep walking. Please remember, dogs communicate through the sense of smell. Your dog can smell 2 telephone poles, a fire hydrant and the neighbors yard and know how many animals were there, what animals they were, what sex they were, were they a neighborhood friend or a stranger, what they ate, where they were going and where they came from. The sense of smell is highly developed in dogs and it is what makes them outstanding hunters, rescuers, illegal substance dogs and companions.

    • Sniffing is how they identify and recognize most things. My female dobe was pretty bad about this, but we used what we learned in puppy class, getting her attention mainly. I used treats and "let's go", and moved on. Eventually just the simple "let's go" snapped her out of it.Use little tidbit treats, not something she would have to stop and chew up. Once you get her attention with the first one, move on and have a second one ready to give her as she comes along.Worked for me, hope it helps.

    • you have to train the dog to a halti not just give up because she doesn't like it! Try a 'Lupi' harness. This will stop the pulling. It is normal and natural for dogs to want to stop and sniff. That's how she learns what other dogs are about.

    • That's what dogs like to do sniff. That for a dog is the pleasure of the walk not the walking. If you could stop the dog from sniffing I doubt whether your dog would want to go for a walk.
