I have a five year old son who had been around dogs his whole life. My parents have two labs who are six years old. My son spends 3-4 nights a week at his grandparent's house? He wants to get a small dog. I have done a lot of research on the subject and have narrowed it down to either a Corgi or a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Between these two breeds which one do you think would be the better choice?

    • None. A small dog and young kid do not mix. The small dog could easily be injured by too young of a child....especially when the child didn't mean to harm the dog. Also, there's only so much that a dog could put up with. Kids annoying dogs commonly results in dog bites.

    • The spaniel is a great dog for very young children. But, as they age and get more active, the dog will be less likely to do the active things the kids do. Spaniels have a prissy mentality. Why not get a lab, since helikes them? Their activity level will stay the same as they age and if the lab is a puppy now, he/she will bond to your child as a friend. Labs have been consistently rated as excellent dogs for smaller homes regardless of their size as long asyou let the child and the dog play outside together. In five years, you'd thank me.

    • yea small dogs are not good for little kids...i rolled over on my silky terrier when i was 6 or 7 and she was 8 months old..she broke her legs or rather i did :(

    • Toys 'R Us has your small breed on the shelf ... and you can choose the color!NO dog is right for a small child. NO decent breeder will sell to a family with a small child and CERTAINLY no good breeder would allow one of his/her pups to be given as a child's pet.WAKE UP. Acquiring a dog is a HUGE decision. The ADULTS in the family must be willing to take responsibility for all aspects of care. No way a decent breeder would sell a pup to you.

    • I would definitely go with the Cavalier King Spaniel, they are gentle, all around family dogs who love attention and crave human contact. I have never met an aggressive Cavalier. One thing I will point out is that since it is a small breed I would proceed caution and watch your son and the dog as they play together, because he might unintentionally injure the dog, but other than that you should be fine. I have a Chihuahua and a 4 year old toddler who live under the same roof, and play fine with each other, and even take naps together..they are best buddies, and he is very protective of the baby. Corgis tend to be snappier than the average dog, but that doesn't mean that they are not the right dog for you..again it will be your decision in the end. But I would chose the Cavalier. Good luck with your new puppy, whatever breed he may be.Here is a website with more info.http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/cavalierkingcharlesspaniel.htm

    • Out of the two dogs that you have chosen I would choose to get your son the Corgi. The Corgi is built to be more sturdy and compact compared to the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Though the Spaniel will probably be more dainty and pretty for your companion, for a child the more sturdy built Corgi would be better. The corgi can handle a child better, while if your son steps on the Spaniel wrong or drops her to high up she could get hurt. However, please do make sure your child understands the delicate nature of most small dogs. You should also consider getting him a Tibetan terrier. I met a corgi once. It lived in a home with a two and an eight year old. HOWEVER, Remember that no matter how study the corgi is built he still is prone to being injured if not taken care of by a child properly. Playing with large dogs and playing with small dogs is an entirely different experience for a child. Please make sure he understands that he must be gentle with the puppy, and not so rough with him as he develops into a dog.

    • when i was young I had a brittney spaniel that was on the smallish side. Im not sure about the king charles, but corgis are High energy dogs and will need a lot of exercise!

    • they are both sweet and loving dogs hard choice dont listen to the people saying young kids and dogs dont mix because I had a dog eever sence I was born and i loved it it was a play mate for me sence i was a only child

    • A spaniel would be a better choice. Which ever choice you make, you will need to supervise both the child and the dog when they are together. Not supervising is asking for trouble. Another choice is a shih tzu. They don't shed and are very good with children. A lab or golden retriever are good choices too despite their size. If you get one as a pup, the child will be able to grow with it. Their activity level does not change and are great with kids and very friendly.

    • Cavalier are much more submissive than a corgi. This is probably due to the fact that Corgies were bred to herd cattle and Cavaliers were bred to lay in the bed of kings and queens to attract fleas. Also if a biting incident did occur, a Cavalier would do a lot less damage than a Corgi.

    • First off, you need to be the owner and master of this dog. No five year old is competent enough to barely wipe their butts, let alone raise a dog! Corgi would be a better choice between these two as they are fine with kids as long as the kid isn't hitting them, and their actually a good size dog. their only slightly smaller in size as a lab, just way shorter as they have small legs. They are very smart and trainable and love to play outside, go for walks, play fetch, etc. They also need a good amount of mental stimulation as well. They need to be socialized with other dogs and children early and often when their puppies so they become social animals. Overall they are great pets but require a lot of financial and time commitment. The KCC are cute dogs but have a ton of health problem and aren't very active. If you determine after your research that those dogs are too much of a commitment, get a pug. Their cheaper, lazier, better with kids, and will require much less work.
