We got a small Jack Russell dog from a rescue centre about 8 months ago. When anyone goes to leave the house he goes ballistic he will jump up and try and stop the person leaving, or if we get out and close the door he jumps at the door handle and has now broken a tooth. We employed a dog behaviourist but after 6 months even she has now given up. We have tried water, noise , treats, muzzles and crates but all to no avail.

    • So you're saying a muzzle that would prevent your dog from biting the door knob doesn't work? Or if you put in him a crate, he still bites the door knob? He's a wizard!Since Houdini here can escape from a crate, I don't know what other advice to give you.

    • when you gone, crate the dog. otherwise you need to establish the door zone as off limits.whena person leaves or enters the house, teach your dog to sit & stay until released. one of the most effect negative reinfocements i've foudn is an ultra-sonic no bark noise emitter. these produce a high pitched sound that is something dogs find uncomfy to listen to. you can buy these at Walgreens now for about 19 bucks.to establish the off limits zone, when the dog approaches the door give the dog your corrective command (somethign like "off" or "away") and press the button. when the dog backs up from the door reward the wanted behavor either witha treat or some affection.you can buy an automatic sound emitor online or even at stores like Petsmart. this will prevent you from having to kennel the doganother suggestion is remove the dog fromt he room when people come in and leave your house; either by putting him in the bathroom of kenneling him

    • i have a spray ( http://www.naturaldogs.co.uk/store/bitter-yuck-no-chew-spray-8oz.html ) which has stopped my dog using his mouth to open my door so might stop yours biting the door handle, best bet is to shut him in his crate so he cant hurt himself tho

    • Insted of spending money on sprays that your dog may actually like..Try pepper! Put pepper on the door handle and once he taste it im pretty sure he wil stop! This stopped my puppy chomping on my skirting boards so worth a try on the door handle. Not only the taste he will hate but also the smell maybe stopping him going near the handle!Good luck! xx
