I am looking for advice from those familiar with the condition of "limber tail" that occurs with sporting breeds. My five year old yellow lab is showing all signs of flacid tail after a long day of swimming in coldish water. I understand this condition slowly remedies itself within a couple weeks but he is just not himself today and his tail is quite uncomfortable in general. I can tell he is a bit of pain. I would prefer to avoid the Vet this Monday, if possible. Is there anything like aspirin that is safe for him to take?

    • The best thing to do is leave the tail alone. Rest is recommended. Complete recovery is usually seen by 2 weeks and often occurs within a few days although it recurs later during training in 1/3 of the cases. Some owners and trainers feel that anti-inflammatory drugs shorten the recovery time if given when the condition is first seen. You might also use warm packs at the base of the tail which will help the relief of pain.
