What is a large dog that is good with kids and cats?

I don't want a small dog. I want a medium to large dog. But I already have a cat and a two year old. What dog breed would be safe around them? I originally wanted a siberian husky but I read that they find anything smaller than them to be prey.

    • great danes are really good with children. the cat though, it really depends on the dog. normally if you get the dog as a puppy it should get along with the cat because it will have known it since it was really young.

    • Both of my nieces have Great Danes. One of them has a baby in the house and the dog is perfect around the kids. They are really nice dogs and if you want big, they are big. But, friendly, even tempered, easily trained and gentle.

    • my aunts lurcher is so gentle around absolutley anything! hes excellent with children and other s,all dogs and cats, wouldnt hurt a fly. whether it is his upbringing or his actual breed i dont know. excellent dogs though! very nice looking aswell

    • Golden Retrievers and Labradors are the first breeds that come to mind. As the other answerer said, Old English Sheepdog, they get along with everybody. I grew up with them, I want another one, they are fantastic. There are Dogs 101 videos on YouTube that you can check out to find out a variety of breeds that could be good in your family. I have a friend who has a Siberian Husky, her family has always had them, and at one point they had a cat and he was cool with it. They decided that they didn't like cats, that's the only reason he's gone. Most large breed dogs are very docile and get along well with animals and children.

    • Lab or golden retriever, unless you like really BIG dogs, then a Great Dane or St. Bernard. Most mixes are good when raised young around children & cats. I'd stay away from Airedales, Dobermans & Chows, though, they can be good or bad. German Shephards are fine, if raised very young among kids & cats. They are also very protective, as are Labs. The advantage to Labs is their short hair and minimum shedding around the house.

    • Most dogs will respect cats if they are puppies when they come into a house with cats. (as puppies, of course, they will not respect the cat, they will try to play with them, but they should grow up to feel like those cats are part of the family).Well-bred Newfoundlands are lovable and very sweet and gentle, perfect with children. However, 'good with children' does not mean that the dog should have to tolerate a child's rough handling. Children and dogs can be a great mix; but no two-year-old should ever be left alone with even the sweetest of dogs; or allowed to pull its ears or tail or bother the dog if the dog wants to be left alone (as sometimes, it will). As a parent, you can watch and teach both child and dog to behave well with each other. Don't let the child do anything to the dog that you would not tolerate the child doing to a younger sibling; and obedience-train the dog, starting when the dog is a puppy (they can learn to sit before they're six months old; keep the training sessions happy and brief). Newfoundlands also are a high-maintenance breed, necessitating lots of grooming; and they drool. You should also check out the Spinone Italiano (an old Italian sporting breed); they are large but not giants; and very good-natured; and their hair isn't so long as the Newfoundland's. I've watched one of them growing up at the dog park; he is a lovely dog at 18 months; owned by a family with a young child. http://www.spinoneclubofamerica.com/If you're getting a puppy, make sure you buy from a reputable, responsible breeder. Tell the breeder that you have a young child and a cat; and that you want a puppy with a mellow temperament. Some breeders may not sell you a puppy since you have so young a child. (with the one litter I bred, I broke my own rule to sell one puppy with a family that had a two year old and four year old boys; because I met the family and was impressed not only by the good manners and behavior of the little boys, but by their mother and how she guided/supervised her boys; it turned out to be an excellent placement. Of course, I also was careful in my selection of the pup for them; I chose what I believed was a pup with almost a perfect temperament for that situation.). Of course, any dog you choose must have regular off-leash exercise so that it will not expend its energy inside the house (or accidentally knocking down furniture or children); a fenced yard and/or nearby fenced dog parks or safe places for the dog to play (and for you to walk to or drive to) are essential, in my opinion. Obedience classes are also essential; and don't wait until the pup is a wild year-old adolescent; start a basic class before the dog is 8 months (four months, five months, six months, all good times).Good luck.

    • I would have to agree with Labrador or Golden Retriever. I have a lab and he is great around children, my best friend has a golden retriever and is the most placid, obedient dog I have ever met and he loves children and his best friend is a cat lol :)As the previous answer stated, search up Dogs101 - they are a great source of info if you're researching dogs.
