    • Depends on their specialization - some would be involved in a wide area of practice, while some are specialists. The most common image would be the pet or companion animal practitioner working in vet clinics/hospitals. Most typical routines: vaccination and deworming. Somewhat frequently: treatment for diarrhea, parasitism. Occasionally: tending to accidents, whelping, ceasarian section. But there'd also be the farm animal practitioner - specializing in either poultry, swine, cattle or other so-called "production animals". They keep food production sustainable, and the foods we eat safe. Vets work in slaugther houses too, this is a normal requirement for most national meat inspection bureaus.Zoo, wildlife and exotic animals practitioner - these are totally different disciplines from the pet practitioner and farm practitioner. They play important roles in keeping the ecology of wildlife preserves. They work also in zoos and universities.Laboratory animal practitioner - these vets would be responsible for researching and developing new drugs/foods/cosmetics/medical devices and techniques. Their line of work is very controversial today. But believe me, no matter what the animal rightists or activists say, they do play very important roles. Almost surely, you yourself have benefitted already from the results of their work. There are military vets, they play important roles in wars that result to long stand-offs. They also take care of the canine units. Like the war in Iraq, vets were needed to take care of the private zoos in Baghdad. They also take care of rebuilding the livestock industries in war ravaged countries. There'd be vets specializing in marine animals. Some would be working in marine parks. There are vets in government. They are responsible for the country's policies, especially when it comes to keeping epidemics in check. They monitor the entry of live animals, animal products (beef, milk, pork, poultry, eggs), and animal byproducts (leathers, fertilizers, etc.) into the country. Vets are also involved in multinational organizations, such as the World Organisation for Animal Health - these also help keep epidemics in check, like the bird flu and mad cow diseases. Some vets have careers as university professors. Some have careers as consultants to pharmaceutical companies or in dog food companies. Some specialize in race horses. How much do they make? It depends on the country they are in and in the career path they choose. It's a medical degree so if they are in goverment service or in the military, its better than the average. Those in goverment, farm animal practice and in the pharmaceuticals industries would of course get very good incomes. Some pet practitioners do as well as the lawyers and human doctors.
