I want to buy a dog to be my running companion, but I live in an apartment; what breed should I consider?
I run four days a week for an hour. On my three rest days I can take the dog for a walk or a light jog, but I will not be running. I live in an apartment in the city (Toronto).Dalmatians are my favourite breed. Dals and Vizslas!

High energy dogs: border collies, Dalmatians need extensive exercise. The more the better, and you sound like a perfect match. Check thru the dog breeds on the internet for a more complete list. As always please check pet-finder and adopt a shelter pet they are usually there since the previous owner did not know what to do with them and they found destructive ways to try and expel all this energy they have. Most are dumped in shelters due to stupidity of the owner. Both are very intelligent dogs easy to train.
a border collie would be a good idea...but you have to remember that they are super super smart and get bored easily...so you have to make sure to keep their minds stimulated.a vizsla or a Rhodesian ridgeback would also be great dogs for a running companion...they have the ability to run for long distances and be energetic but can go home and be a couch potatoes.
A Dalmatian or a Vizsla would be a great choice.Do keep in mind though that any dog that you get as a puppy, cannot be a running partner until it is at least 18 months old. The growth plates in medium/large breed dogs do not close and harden until that age, so any forced exercise (forced means anything that is continuous, without very frequent breaks) is out of the question while they're young. You'd risk doing permanent damage to bones and joints if you do, and so really you wouldn't have a good running partner for very long.If you have the time to train and do off-leash exercise with a puppy on a daily basis until it's 18 months old then that's great -- otherwise consider rescuing an older dog. I'm sure you could browse your local shelters or find some rescue organizations near you that have adult dogs that would fit in well with your lifestyle.http://www.boxerworld.com/forums/1049450-post10.htmlhttp://www.boxerworld.com/forums/boxer-ring/147101-running-jasper.htmlhttp://www.boxerworld.com/forums/dog-training/149319-running-puppy.html
As long as your apartment doesn't have a weight limit, I would recommend any kind of shepherd dog. My favorites are the Australian Shepherd (which is very high energy) or the Belgian Shepherd. My Belgian once ran 8 miles down a mountain over the course of a couple hours (this was before he was trained to stay in the yard) then went swimming in a lake. My only concern would be that with any athletic breed of dog, you have to worry about not having a yard for them to play in. Another dog you might want to look into is the Keeshond, which does better with apartment life then some larger dogs. Here are some info about all three dogs:http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/belgiangroenendael.htmhttp://www.dogbreedinfo.com/australianshepherd.htmhttp://www.dogbreedinfo.com/keeshond.htmThese are some sights you might want to look at when trying to find the right breed:http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/index.htmhttp://www.yourpurebredpuppy.com/dogbreeds/index.htmlGood luck! Hope this helped!
As long as you realize a dog's only physical and mental needs shouldn't be met by just runs and walks, and that the dog can't be run until he's old enough, and running on pavement will greatly increase the chance for early onset and/or worse joint problems with the dog, THEN I agree Dalmations and Vizslas may be fine, depends on you:)A border collie would not be happy with just running, even though they have such high stamina. Please get your dog from a reputable breeder or rescue
dalmatians are dumb as sticks and so overbred, too many health problems ... get yourself a jack russell terrier :O) i am bias ... big dog in small package and would easily run that distance, easily ... and on the days you do not want to run, fetch and frisbee are great fun ... and how awesome you get to live in one of the most pet-friendly cities in canada :O)
I would recommend a small breed dog, like Bijon Frise. No need to groom every week if you give it a low cut. Most are excellent listeners and will obey you within a month. (If constant training)
