What happens if you feed your dog cat food?

I ran out of dog food a couple of days ago and since Ive been too busy to pick him up some new food, Ive been feeding him my cats food. Im going tomorrow to get him some dog food, but I just wanted to know if its not that big of a deal.

    • Usually they get really bloated. It's not super good for them. It has different nutrients. If you're too busy to pick up dog food how much time do you have to actually play with your dog?

    • Two days worth won't kill your dog. But, cat food is much richer, higher in fat, and is simply not meant for a dog to digest. Dogs can get deathly ill from being on a cat food diet for an extended period of time.

    • As a one off it should be O.K.It is not the fat contents you need to worry about but a certain ingredient. I think it is taurine, although I am not 100% sure.Cats need it in higher doses however this amount can cause liver or kidney damage in a dog over time. Most of the time a one off is O.K but I have heard of dogs getting sick when owners make a habit of it.Good Luck.

    • short term like that.. most likely loose stools and diarreah.. tho pancreatis is possible as well.Long term it will cause nutrtional deficiencies and can lead to problems like bladder and kidney stones.A better solution to cat food would be to see what kind of meat you have in your freezer. boil him some chicken or hamburger along with rice.. you can use some green beans or carrots for filler as well.

    • Hopefully you mean dry cat food.If so it's not that big of a deal if it's short term. Dry cat food is high in protein and is considered to rich for a dogs system, which means your dog may get diarrhea, if eaten in large quantities.Corn flakes would have been a better choice.

    • Unlike cats dogs need a steady diet of the same food. Their system is dependent on consistency of certain proteins and nutrients. Without this your dog is susceptible to digestive problems as little as gas and diarrhea to something life threatening like bloat (see link). Even a change in brand dog food can upset a dog's health."Dogs and cats each have special dietary needs and should be fed the appropriate pet food. Cats should not eat dog food because it does not provide all the essential nutrients a healthy cat needs. In short, dog food is designed to meet the nutritional needs of a dog and cat food is designed to meet the needs of a cat."The high protein and fats in cat food may be filling for your dog and end his hunger but the nutrients are too hard for his body to process.

    • You really should not give your dog cat food, it can cause major problems. If you run out and have to give her something before you can get to the store make her oatmeal, plain cooled oatmeal, don't know why dogs seem to love it, it is actually good for shiny coats, and it doesn't upset their stomach. I used to give my dog the oatmeal that was left after I made some for the kids. The vet said it was actually quite good for her.

    • Cat food is for cats, but i have done the same thing., My dog gains weight, but other then the weight gain, he is ok. I would not continue to feed your dog cat food... but if nothing else im sure it is better then table food! get him doggy food and tell him your sorry. Speaking of... I have to get dog food this morning before feeding my doggie!
