Is there such a thing as a hypoalergenic dog?

I really love dogs (hence my name) however as much as I love them some of my extended family are allergic to dog hair. Any suggestions?

    • Chihuahuas, miniature Schnauzers and poodles cause the least troubles with Asthma and allergies.... Their is also a good spray at your pet supply to keep the hair and dander down for a few hours if you know in advance that you are having company that is allergic to cats or dogs.

    • I work in a Pet Store...Bichon Frise dogs are supposed to be hypoallergenic...I have a Mexican Hairless dog...very hairfree...he's amazing...smooth skin where hair would be. Think bout one of those..also called a Xoloitzcuintle.

    • all dogs shed. some breeds of dogs hair have a longer growing cycle than others. A lab's hair grows aboutn2 -3 inches then dies and fall out. that's why they shed so much. a poodles hair can grow to about 18 inches if you let it. then it dies and falls out. same with shih tzu's, maltese, lhasa's ets. when you brush your hair, what's in your brush? hair? do you shed? not in the way you are thinking, but your hair does shed in that if it has reached the end of it's growing cycle it falls out. that's why you have hair in your brush. as far as a dog that is hypoallergenic, most people are bothered by their dander, not the hair. dander is dead skin cells that need to be removed by regular bathing. some people are bothered by a shedding dog and the excessive hair around the house, but if your pet has excessive dander that can cause problems also. so a dog with a longer growth cycle in ther hair, like poddles etc. are better for people with allergies if you get them groomed regularly.

    • I purchased a Mini-schnauzer just for that purpose... It does not shed and I am not allergic to him. He is also so very great with kids and a good family pet. Just an all around fun animal. Good luck!

    • Last year, my friend got a Chinese Crested. She loves it unconditionally (which is good, because the breed is potentially truly repulsive with age...google "Sam World's Ugliest Dog" to see what I mean) and it doesn't seem to aggravate her allergies.
