It should be ok but it depends on the amount of time you have before leaving. You want at least a month to bond with a dog before leaving for any amount of time. But in general good kennels treat dogs well so when you leave you don't have to worry about him. It comes down to if you have bonded with him enough before you leave. Most shelter dogs are especially weary when it comes to knew owners. So let him/her know before you leave you are there master and that you care about them and such.
I would be a bit leary about boarding a dog that you basically just got out of a shelter. Shelter life is very hard on a dog, and sticking it in aboarding kennel could be a major setback in the dogs adjustment to your family and home.
I wouldn't kennel the dog when you leave. There are pet hotels that are much nicer than kenneling. Check out the local ones in your area. They have people that are there 24/7 and a lot have doggy day care where they can have off-leash fun all day with other dogs.Or see if you can get a pet sitter.DO NOT KENNEL. It really might be traumatic for the dog; just like returning to a shelter again.
If we are talking about an interval of say 6 months between getting him, and going away, I'd say he'll be fine. It does depend on the overall temperament of the dog, how fearful he is, or not, and so on and how well he settles in with you. Most dogs, who are outgoing, actually quite enjoy going into a Boarding Kennel. There's always loads of things going on for starters, and if the kennel is a good one, the staff will work like mad to help their boarders be happy. And it also depends on how long this dog has been in a Shelter. There may be an element of 'here we go again', back in kennels, for him, but it does all depends on the individual dog. I know my sister felt this way when she had to board her Rescue, but she was fine. You could think about having a house-sitter, rather than using a commercial kennel, much as kennels are usually safer (thinking about escaping from your property in your absence).
