My puppy is currently on Royal Canin for puppies, which seems to be quite good. We don't know whether to change this when he's a bit older - and we'd like to know in advance what the best dog food for him would be. He's going to be around 15 inches to the shoulder, and we'd like something that you can get at most places in the UK, not ordering off the internet. Thanks!Just to say, we'd like dry food rather than wet or raw.

    • You want something with as much actual meat as possible and as few grains and fillers. By actual meat I mean not by products or meat meal (which is generally actually bone meal).Dog Food Analysis (linked below) is a brilliant website that compares dog foods by ingredient list and gives them a rating. Obviously, the higher the rating the better the food. Before I went raw (which I know you don't want) I used James Wellbeloved.

    • Royal Canin food is best :) I wouldn't change that when puppy gets older, you can keep using royal canin for adult breed dogs. I feed my guide dog with Royal Canin 5 + 5oz a day, added little water in it

    • You might like dry dog food but it doesn't do your dog any good.Google 'food dogs die for' and read some the many articles written by knowledgeable and qualified professionals (i.e. those who have no affiliation to, and are not in the employ of the commercial pet food producers). If I might give an analogy, for years the tobacco industry paid medical "experts" to say that there was no link between smoking and health. Nowadays we all know that smoking tobacco is harmful and can cause an early death.Don't allow the pet food manufacturers multi-billion pound advertising fool you, they don't care about your dog, they care about profit and pleasing their shareholders. The best dog food available is meat, preferably raw.

    • I use wainrights which you can get from pets at home, it is £29 for a huge bag and has the same ingrediants as it's more expensive james well beloved. It contains meat rather than deriatives and is natural.

    • well best 2 for ingredients are orijen (use there web site to find your nearest supplier and applaws have just realest a dry food on par with it (pets at home stock there wet food so hopefully they will stock there dry food)

    • I feed my Doberman on Baker's Choice. A big sack from Morrison's or Tesco is around £24. He loves it, unlike the little red polo mints look-a-like he used to get.I do add roast chicken and chopped up spring greens to it along with the chicken jus. Any meat juices go down well. Roughly 30 seconds later I can hear an empty bowl being licked across the kitchen floor.I also add a tin of sardines and the olive oil into Winalot twice a week as a treat. Dogs love fish. When I first got him, his ribs were showing, his coat falling out and dull. Now he has gained weight, coat shines. A really handsome animal.
