I see people flip out over people who breed dogs without extensive genetic/health testing, yet they themselves don't undergo such testing before they have human children. So why must dogs have their eyes, hips, etc. all thoroughly tested before they are bred are else the breeder is the scum of the earth, but it's okay for them to not undergo such testing before they have human children? I know a woman who hates "BYBs" because they don't go through certified health testing and what not. She also knowingly has back problems, and then she still had children. Her husband also has poor eyesight. Why is the health of dogs more important than human children to these people?

    • Good question and one I've pondered over more than once! Fact is whereas nobody has the right to dictate which human mates with which human (Hitler tried that), we can at least try to ensure that only healthy puppies are produced - much as going by what's happening around here, I has me doubts!!! Sigh.

    • There's many reasons that the two are different. Dogs are often killed when they are unhealthy or temperamentally unsound, or even just because they can't be found a home. Children aren't. Humans created domestic dogs, they aren't the product of natural evolution. If they were, they wouldn't have near the number of genetic issues many dogs have. Dog breeders are producing a PRODUCT, and selling defective products when such defects can be avoided is irresponsible and negligent. In addition, dogs can't undergo health screenings themselves and decide not to reproduce. They can't inform themselves about the consequences reproduction might have and make their own decision. They're forced to breed with mates we select for them. You can't compare dogs to humans, they're totally different. In addition, plenty of people do choose not to have children because of genetic problems. I'm one of those people. I have health conditions which are genetic and which would very likely be passed on to any children. Because of that, I will not have a child of my own. Should I lose my mind and decide I want a child one day, I'll adopt, there are plenty that need homes. And I'm far from the only one who makes that decision because of health problems. It's not that anyone thinks the health of dogs is more important. It's that humans have the right to reproduce with whomever they like whether it's in the best interests of potential children or not. Dogs don't.

    • I guess that is really a very fair question and in truth there are undoubtedly many people who should never have children but the bottom line is that all humans have 'Human Rights' and can have as many kids as they want and with who ever they want (well, unless they are in China). Dogs do not have the same rights but be fair, selective breeding is in the species best interests in the long run.

    • I guess because they are not planning on 'selling' their 'breedings' of human infants.Animals have no voice and people have to be their advocates. When a man and a woman have a baby it is not for the intention of selling it with any kind of AKC certificate!I do agree that people with congenital diseases that have a risk of being passed on to the children, should not have children. But that is only my opinion. I work in mental health and see many people with BiPolar, Schizophrenia and other highly 'passed on' diseases and disorders who go off their meds to 'have a baby'. Well they become so psychotic 'off their meds' that they end up on our locked inpatient psychiatric unit.

    • Because dogs are being (largely) bred for profit & to provide pets, to/for OTHER people. Every litter can contain as many as 12 puppies. (Find me a woman able to do that, in one fell swoop.) Those who have human children usually KEEP them (unlike many/most breeders) & have to deal with the genetic "fall-out". But there are people, for genetic reasons who do NOT have children, (I would be one of those.)

    • Today I read a woman put her handicapped 8 year old child in a wooden cage while she amd the rest of her family went out to the movies. I think this would be perfectly ok since we cage dogs. And what about leashes - I've seen more than one off lead 2 year old child that ran amok in a shopping mall - why not put an e collar on them and get the little rascals under control. Now, if you are really feeling left out, I"m sure with your signed consent we can find some laboratory in a third world country willing to do experiments on you...to better the breed.
