After deworming are you suppose to see the worms in the poop? Or no?

My puppy was dewormed yesterday with shots and everything a few hours after that when he pooped a roundworm would be in his poop... He did that 4 times yesterday and today no worms but now has diarrhea.... What does this mean?

    • Most intestinal parasites secrete chemicals that affect the motility of the digestive tract. How fast and strongly the contents of the intestine are moved along by the body. If these chemicals are suddenly removed it would be natural for the function of the intestine to be somewhat disrupted for a period of time.Make sure that your dog has plenty of fresh water available to him and take him to the vet if he continues to have digestive problems after 24 hours or if he refuses to eat or drink or becomes lethargic.

    • if your puppy was de-wormed yesterday and you saw worms in his poop later that means that the de-wormer is working. many common de-wormers work by basically paralyzing or partially paralyzing the worms so they lose their grip on the intestines and are passed out of the dogs system. so seeing worms in the poop following a dose of de-wormer is perfectly normal if the puppy did indeed have worms. in order to be fully effective most de-wormers will need to be given a 2nd time (usually 1-2 weeks following the original dose). since your puppy obviously had worms in his system, you should give your vet a call and let them know so they can schedule you for a follow up visit.
