    • He could have something more troubling going on other than congestion. It sounds like a problem that is pretty typical to pug nosed breeds. He needs to be seen by a vet, it will only get worse and cause him problems in the future.

    • Some shihtzu's make these sounds. Sometimes they have blockage up inside the nasal passages. Often this shows up in the first 6 weeks. Other times it happens as they grow. There is a procedure the vet can do to open these up to insure she gets proper air. It's very common in shih tzu's, pugs, etc. Our shih tzu did not have this 'snuffling' noise until she was about that age. We thought at first it might be allergies since she didn't have it as a small puppy. Our vet said sometimes it occurs as the pup grows. She had the procedure and it cleared. Does the ''congestion" gets worse when she gets excited or is actively playing or running? This is a concern as well because she may not be getting enough oxygen that in the long run may cause nuerological or other problems if vital organs aren't getting the oxygen they need. It is serious if she has some narrowing of the nasal passages that block her breakthing. Please speak to your vet about it, he/she can check very quickly. If this isn't the problem she may have allergies since she doesn't have a fever. The vet can decide on the correct medication, our sharpei has benadryl for her allergies. But you need to get your dog to the vet. Sometimes the narrowing can restrict the breathing enough she can become very ill from it if she is not getting enough oxygen. In the long run she will have a lot of problems down the road if this is the case.It can be a problem with the shih tzu breed. If the Vet diagnoses that it is a narrowing of the passages contact your dogs breeder as she/he should be alerted to any conditions their puppies develop. This way if it happens more than once they will know that they need to make some changes to their breeding program. A good breeder tracks these things.
