What kind of dog can fight off a cougar?

good luck with that. Dogs can scare off cougars but if the cougar was pissed and fighted the dog the dog couldn't win. Cougars have retractable claws and know where and when to bite. Your dog would be screwed if it did survive

    • 1) People who hunt Lion (Mountain or African) use PACKS of dogs. The way lions are 'programed' makes them very difficult for even a pack of 8-12 to fight.2) Rhodesian Ridgebacks were bred specifically to hunt African Lions (Rhodesia is now part of Zimbabwe)http://www.murenga.com/irr.htmhttp://www.barkbytes.com/history/rhode.htmhttp://www.4loveofdog.com/RR4Ever.htm3) Getting involved in pack hunting of wild game is risky business. It should not be entered into with out a ton of thought, plenty of financial security and good aim (camera or rifle). Getting a dog for the purpose of 'fighting off a cougar' is NOT a good idea. It will lead to heart-break and potential charges if you are caught poaching.ETA: NONE. No single dog can take a cougar. If you are that worried about your safety, take a safety course through the local Fish and Game Service. If you want a dog who can bark (and possibly make a cougar think about looking elsewhere for prey) get any loud, vocal mutt from the pound. Don't get one with high prey drive because IF they see a cougar and it is headed away they may try to 'hunt' it and end up dead for their trouble. Carry 'bear spray' easily accessible and make noise. Many safety tips are area-specific so you should definitely talk to the Fish and Game Service.ETA: I'm not the one getting defensive. I grew up in lion territory, have hunted them and have seen what a single male can do to a PACK of dogs when forced into a fight. And yes, since you bring it up with an offensive tone I want EVERY link you are claiming.ETA: Link one is questionable. There is chicken-wire fencing in the back ground which means there is a good chance it's a 'canned' hunt (the cat was likely drugged) Link 2 is the same pair...still likely a drugged cat. (Highly likely)Link 3 would not load on my computer. I'll see if I can jack it through from another site.Link 4: That is a young, malnourished cat. I've seen it much clearer before. Considering that this is once again being done with a CAPTIVE cat there is a HUGE difference. A wild Mt. Lion (puma, cougar, painter, rock lion w/e you want to call it) is a whole world different. Show me a single dog taking on a full-grown cougar in it's natural territory. One that has never been locked in a cage and starved or drugged. Nice try though. I'll edit this again if I can get link 3 to work.

    • None. It depends on the situation. I mean a cougar if it has babies will fight to the death. They have been known to take down black bears and fight off grizzly bears. But most cougars avoid confrontation. People who live in areas with cougars mostly never even see a cougar because they are so shy. But a group of dogs like a group of hounds could.

    • Fila Brasileiro can..they was breed to hunt jaquire, bear, and other large game...Edit---Just because i said they was breed to hunt doesnt meen you have to hunt..I am not a hunter either but i still own three of them and yes a Fila will fight off anything that is a threat to you or him...They are very protective over their owners wether it be a human or an animal..My female attacted a dog for going after my husband...so if they feel like they have to they have what it takes to do it...They, was to like i said go after LARGE game....

    • What breed of dog can fight good against a cougar?I don't believe in hunting animals. I am asking because I have recently moved to a very rural area. I do not own a firearm, but I am wondering what specific type of dogs can be used to fight off cougars for when I go hiking.

    • A large or giant breed dog that won't back down. You can have the biggest dog in the world, but if he is fearful, then you're out of luck. You'd need a large dog that doesn't intimidate easily. Livestock guardian dogs are a great choice. Dogs such as Kangals/Anatolian Shepherds are GREAT for this. They're very large, as the males generally weigh about 130-150 lbs and won't back down to a cougar.A Caucasian Ovtcharka is another option, and are actually used as security dogs in Europe. They are HUGE.Great Danes, Mastiffs, Newfoundlands, St Bernards and Irish Wolfhounds are all good choices if they're not fearful easily.Dogo Argentinos have proven time and time again that they can defeat Cougars in a fight.Cougars can be large, but when their fight or flight instinct kicks in, they will most always choose flight, as a dog will choose fight. A wild animals first choice is going to be to flee a fight to spare it from injury. The dog should be of equal, or close size to the cougar. For those of you saying "none" are clueless. Many dogs, including Kangals, Dogos and Filas have proven time and time again to not only fight off, but defeat cougars in a violent confrontation. There are several videos on the internet if you challenge what I say.Forsaken: You say none, but you're obviously miss informed. Would you like me to post a link to a video of a Dogo Argentino thrashing a full grown adult puma?http://i28.tinypic.com/nlbclz.jpghttp://i29.tinypic.com/28vspx0.jpghttp://videos.caught-on-tape.tv/video/f401c72a-7158-46d5-8037-4e8d53718a21.htmhttp://video.google.nl/videoplay?docid=1191992140329480341CheersFurther info:Forsaken: Your opinion seems to naturally favor the mountain lion. These cats were not drugged at all. Infact, the intention of these videos is to examine the gameness of the dogs for hunting ability. They were testing these dogs to see how they'd handle themselves in these situations. If the dog were to win in an enclosed location, and the cougar were to win in it's natural habitat, how can we ever come to a conclusion?
