First thing you need to do is cut the attachment that you have between each other. If you can't cut it, then at least lessen his attachment to you and vice versa. If your dog will feel it, then he will long to other attention then and that time, he will turn it to other dogs. If you continue to give him the attention that he needs, he will ended up never getting along with other dogs.

    • Socialization does not always include play. Some dogs are not interested in playing with other dogs. Have fun with your dog by taking him for long walks and training.

    • Dogs tend to pick up on how the owner is feeling so if you feel nervous then he will feel like he has to protect you, if you panick or get nervous, that could be why he does it.You need to keep calm at all times, talk to him in a gentle manner, keep praising him. Also watch for the signs, if he stares into the eyes of the other dog pull him away immediately. Also notice if his tail is waggling, this is a good sign, if it tucks under or he goes into a tensed stance again, pull him away a.s.a.p.Its a good idea to muzzle him for a while when around other dogs although this can sometimes make them feel more threatened, also they cannot protect themselfs if another dog attacks. Alternativley you could take him to obedience classes, this will also help him socialise & get used to other dogs.I hope this helps & good luck.

    • I have a 2 year old small dog. He is shy and a bit timid with other dogs and thus far I have unsuccessfully found him a dog bestfriend. Finally, I have a friend who has a puppy and I am hoping this playful puppy will bring out the playfullness in my dog. I have tried to socialise my dog with other dogs many times before, but he doesn't play with them. Will he ever learn to play with other dogs or should I just accept that Wally will never open up when it comes to other dogs?

    • Yep.. my dog was 12 when i got another dog and they live together.. it took about a month to settle them in properly because my dog NEVER socialised.. he is very timid. You need patience and regular play dates for the two dogs, try going to the park first with both dogs and let them run around together.. though be sure the puppy has had all the vaccinations before you arrange this play date because puppies are highly susceptible to infection at their young age. Just give it time, and let the dogs get to know each other and eventually they will either play or just be relaxed around one another.. sometimes you get dogs that aren't very playful, its just their personality, but that doesn't mean you can't try to socialise them :)
