    • Puppies are a big responsibility as you probably already know, the best thing to do is lots of research about the breed, are you ready for the responsibility? If you introduce your puppy to your cat at a young age they might get along, you could even get a bichon frise from a shelter that is good with cats, make sure you supervise your puppy with your cat at all times. I researched that, with proper introductions and training, the Bichon can get along with cats and other animals. It's great that you have the time to look after the puppy, as you will have to keep an eye on it all day. The best thing you can do is make an area of your house for the puppy (the best place would be the kitchen because any pee can be cleaned up easily). I would recommend getting a crate as they are great for potty training, crate training takes a lot of time and patience and it can get frustrating but it is worth it in the end, because your dog will think of it as safe place like a 'den'.Here is a great link about crate training: http://www.perfectpaws.com/crt.htmlThe first thing you will have to do, before you puppy comes home, is puppy proof your house, this means making sure that there is nothing on the floor that it might chew on, like a cable, or something small it could swallow. Make sure that everything is out of your puppy's reach that you don't want it to chew on. It would be good to make a routine for you puppy, it will need out to potty about every 30-45 minutes, this seems like a lot of times but it takes time for your puppy to develop bladder control. Your puppy will sleep a lot while young, make sure you don't disturb the puppy while sleeping. Here is some info on your puppy's first day: http://www.teachingpuppies.com/bringing-your-new-puppy-homeThe next thing you will have to do, is make an appointment with your vet, here your puppy will be booked in, they will have a check-up and you can ask as many questions as you want to your vet. Here your puppy will also get it's very important first vaccinations to prevent it getting deadly diseases. You will not be able to take your dog for a walk, or take it places other dogs have been until it has had all of it's injections. Once your puppy has had it's injections you can then start it's vital puppy socialisation (this is letting it meet other dogs, people, seeing new things, experiences e.t.c) This is so it won't be afraid, good socialisation is the best way to ensure a friendly, well-adjusted puppy.Give your puppy lots of praise when it goes to potty in the correct place, it is likely that you will have a few accidents in the house, but don't punish the puppy, just ignore it and praise only when it goes in the correct place. It will take time, but it should eventually understand where the correct place to go is.You can start training your puppy the basic commands such as 'sit' as soon as it comes home. You will be able to make a good bond. Make training sessions fun but short as they get distracted easily while young. Praise your dog for good behaviour and ignore bad/incorrect behaviour this is called positive reinforcement, I think it's the best way to train a dog. I recommend clicker training, what you do is click at the exact time your puppy does something you want it to do (e.g sit) and then reward with a treat. You should find a clicker in your local pet store. Here is a great link about clicker training: http://dogs.about.com/od/dogtraining/qt/clickertraining.htmYou should feed whatever your puppy has been eating at the breeders house or shelter, then gradually move it onto a good quality dry food, this is to avoid an upset tummy. Good quality foods are usually more expensive but I'm sure you will want the best for your dog. Your vet should know of a good quality food to get. Dogs are very expensive to look after as you will have to pay for vet appointments, food, treats and lots more. I'm not sure how much it will cost to get your dog groomed in your area but you could go to your local groomers and find out. Do lots and lots of research before your puppy comes home as you said it's your first ever dog,Bichon Frises are said to be very good with children so it should get on well with a 2 year, they are said to be good family dogs and wonderful companions for children. http://www.justdogbreeds.com/bichon-frise.htmlhttp://dogtime.com/dog-breeds/bichon-frise#Our dog's name is Rosie!!! I think it's the cutest name ever, also Tommy is soo cute!!! If you keep repeating it's name every time you call it, it should eventually learn it's name. Get a treat and call it, when it comes say "Good boy/girl (name)" If you keep repeating it, it should understand eventually.I hope this information might help, good luck! :) Sorry it's so long, there is just so much to puppy care!
