Whats a good breed of dog to buy for a farm?

We dont want any more collies. we dont want collies because thats all we have had for the past years. We want soemthing differnt.

A german shepherd would be a great dog to have on the farm. I know a border collie who lives with a few german shepherds and they all get along great! Good luck!

Oi whats wrong with collies??..only kidding.What about something from the terrier groupwesties,cairn,jacks ect,ect they make great ratters & are hardy little fellows.

Great Pyrenees are wonderful dogs. They are very gentle, loving and intelligent dogs. Protective of family, good with babies and great for guarding livestock from as small as chickens on up to sheep, goats or cattle.These big dogs are fierce to predators, bark at strangers but do not bite people, proven in dog trials. Intimidating to univited guests but just a big teddy bear. They do stand watch and bark a lot at night. Need room to roam, not good for the city.If you have small animals such as cats, chickens etc. be very careful to learn the difference between herding dogs and guardian dogs. Herding dogs chase and kill small animals, guardian dogs are not supposed to chase, once trained and out of puppy stage.

Labs, Retrievers, Great Danes

Have you considered other herding breeds? Maybe a terrier would work out for you. I'd recommend a larger breed only because if you have farm animals that the dog is able to interact with, the dog won't get hurt as easily. Also, if you're looking for a smaller dog, I'd recommend a sturdier breed. Chihuahuas, yorkshire terriers, malteses, etc. probably aren't sturdy enough to have on a farm around large animals.
