this sounds a little crazy but they say one of the best tests to preform on puppies when looking to but one is to drop something like their food bowl on the ground near where all the puppies are. do this loud enough so that it will gain the attention of all the dogs. the dogs should do 1 of 3 things- some will hear the noise and cower down or run away out of fear, some dogs will be curious and run up to the noise to figure out what it is and the others will look up at the noise but continue on doing what ever it is they were doing. that is the dog you want.. unless you want the fearless dog maybe to train as a working dog.hope this helps!

    • If you have never had a Rottweiler, I would always suggest that you contact a local rescue group and adopt an adult Rottie first. That way, you get to experience and learn if the Rottie is really the breed that works out best for you lifestyle and family. There are so many amazing purebred dogs available in rescue- and rotties are pretty popular so there should be plenty of rescue groups in Cali. A puppy is A LOT to take on and you seriously need to dedicate time and lifestyle changes to having a puppy. They are going to have accidents, they need to go to a puppy socialization classes, they have to get 4 set of separate puppy shots, you need to be consistant if you want to be at all successful with pottytraining and obedience. I adopted my Bernese Mountain Dog as a 4 year old adult, and he's was just as accepting and loving as a puppy could have been. Think of it this way- rescue adult dogs need and deserve the love and stability that comes with a good forever home. Plus it feels amazing knowing that you're saving a life and gaining a best friend all at the same time! :-)Links for your research:http://www.akc.org/breeds/rottweiler/index.cfmhttp://www.akc.org/classified/search/landing_breed.cfmhttp://www.arfnc.com/http://www.goldenstaterottclub.com/

    • I don't have too much information about the breed or breeders in your area, but what I can tell you is that you'll want to look for the energy level of the puppies. If you're wanting a calm dog, look over the cutely playing pup, and to the one watching the rest of his littermates. You can do simple tests like seeing how they respond to being held, laid on their backs, and generally handled. If they fight or squirm, or if they seem to have little regard for the people around them, they're probably more independently-minded dogs.

    • Choosing a puppy has a lot to do with the personality of the puppy. If you are a calm couch potato type of person get a lazy puppy believe it or not there are lazy pups. If you are outgoing, fun, and active get a puppy that has the same traits. Remember to check their eyes and make sure they are bright and not crusty looking. Also remember to make sure they have no rashes on them. I hope this helped!

    • If you go to a reputable breeder, and you tell them what you want from a puppy, they should tell you which one will be best for you. They are with them for the first 8-12 weeks, so they know their their temperaments. Try googling for an origination with rotties, and find a breeder. Made sure you do your research, and don't buy from a backyard breeders. A good breeder with have their eyes and hips checked, registered and won't sell them until they are at least 8 weeks old.Make sure you do your research about the breed, too. They are amazing dogs, but can be a handful.Have fun looking for a pup! :)
