    • Here's what the Whippet club has to say about "longhaired" whippets.."Is there a long-coated variety of Whippet? There are dogs who have been referred to as "long-haired Whippets", but it is the opinion of the American Kennel Club and the American Whippet Club that these dogs are actually mixed-breeds. They are not recognized by AKC or any other major canine registry, and cannot compete in events such a racing or coursing."http://www.americanwhippetclub.net/awcpages/whipfaq.htmlIt might be a whippet mix.. maybe some spaniel for the longer coat? It might be mostly whippet that comes from some BYB bloodlines that had something with a long coat introduced into the pedigree somewhere.

    • Some people consider it to be another version of the the Whippet, and here are their websites:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Longhaired_Whippethttp://home.ica.net/~westwood/http://www.longhairedwhippet.com/longhaired_whippet_characteristics.htmBUT, the AKC doesn't see it as another version, so based on their facts, I would say that it's a mix also. http://www.akc.org/breeds/whippet/

    • That's what's called a lurcher. It doesn't actually refer to a specific breed but a type of dog usually based on a whippet or greyhound historically bred for hunting hare or other (usually small fast) game. Whether or not that's what they intended when it was bred is another matter but it falls into that category.I would say fairly confidentally it's a whippet x australian shepherd (black and tan variation). The white points, coat type and ear set virtually eliminates shepherd as a possibility. The coloration and the hair being shorter on the lower leg than the rest of the body rules out the afghan and salukis don't have long hair on their body, only ears and tail.

    • It's a long-haired whippet.http://www.silkenwindhounds.org/Someone crossed a little Shetland Sheepdog into a line of whippets a long time ago; they're rare but not that rare, especially on the left coast. They're adopting the "silken windhound"moniker because the Whippet's breed club threatened to sue.

    • Looks more like a borzoi, or Russian wolfhound, to me.http://media-2.web.britannica.com/eb-media/78/6778-004-CCB5FD7A.jpgBut as they are fairly rare and this dog is quite undersized for the breed, and it really resembles a rough collie cross instead, I'm going to guess it's a collie cross. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/55/Rough_Collie_tri-colour.jpgI had a German shepherd and collie cross when I was younger, and he was a lovely dog that resembled an English shepherd:http://www.whisperingwillowsfarm.com/id2_files/image002.jpgHe looked much like this but with a darker muzzle and less hair on the body, but the same mane and tail. My point is, any collie cross I've seen has generally had the collie facial structure and some semblance of the profuse coat.I don't really see any Afghan, but who knows? Perhaps there is.

    • A " long haired whippet" is a breed created sometime during the 60's or 70's by a man named Walter Wheeler. This breed has recently been found to be linked to Shetland Sheepdogs or Collies through a gene mutation present in the breeds population that they share called MDR1-1 . The presence of the same gene mutation, which causes difficulties with ivermectin family drugs, means that there is Shetland Sheepdog or Collie in the " long haired whippet " and they are not 100% Whippet, despite claims, as Whippets do not contain this gene mutation. This breed has two registries in the US. There is another similar but different American Sighthound breed called the Silken Windhound. This breed started in the 1980's with a Borzoi breeder named Francie Stull. She took several of the " long haired whippets" and combined them with several Borzoi and Whippets, then spent the next few decades refining that breed. The Silken Windhounds have their own registry, standard, stud book, racing, oval track, lure coursing program, rescue program, and breed regionals and nationals. All breeding Silken Windhounds have to be DNA tested to verify parentage in order to have registered litters. The goal of the breed is to eventually be recognized by the AKC. Silken Windhounds are not Whippets and have never claimed to be Whippets. They are simply an American rare breed of Sighthound. http://silkenwindhounds.org Joycehttp://talismanhounds.com
