Read up on any breed before buying to make sure it is a good fit with your lifestyle, living conditions, and family situation.http://www.gopetsamerica.com/dogs/good-guard-dogs.aspx
You want alerts? Go with doberman or shepard. You want smart and powerful go with masiff (or bull mastiff) or Rottweiler. I'm just not sure the Great Dane really competes in this one.
A german sherper maybe you can get one that was trained and that work for the police before and that is retired and that would be better cause it would already have experience.
Well, dobermans do not take well to intruders in their home. But a rottwieler would kill someone to protect it's family, i know, it almost happened with mine.
I would worry more about the money going to training and not the dog. They are all good breeds but you need to look at all the factors. Example - size, length of life, health traits of breed, coat, weather conditions of work environment. There are alot of factors so make sure to cover all you options.
Please hire a security guard. Do not buy a large animal and use it for security. Security dogs for the military and police receive over a year of training and many of them do not make it. Any dog that is encourage to be aggressive and act as a security dog is the equivalent of a loaded gun. If you do not care about the danger to yourself, your family, and others; think about the expensive lawsuit and possible criminal sentence you will face if your large dangerous security dog attacks someone.
