    • A Golden Retriever is the best dog or watch dog you could ever have. Its everything you would want in a dog. Its a very nice and loyal dog ,but can be very protective.

    • I assume you're just looking for a dog that would bark to alert you to people on your property (as opposed to a fully trained animal that would fuss, rush, and possibly bite if needed?) If that's all you're after then you need to break down traits a little more and figure out what breed would fit - any dog can bark or be trained to bark, after all.Schnauzers and other terriers are all excellent watch dogs (though some may be nippy with younger kids.) Some working breeds are as well (German Shepherd, Rottweiler, Doberman Pinscher.)If you're looking for a fully trained guard dog then time to do some research on reputable breeders of schutzhund titled dogs in your area. Look for trainers, as well. See what's available. Not just any dog will do for this type of work and it WILL take professional training. Not every person can HANDLE one o these dogs either....Breeds the are generally well suited include German Shepherd, Alsatian, Rottweiler, Doberman Pinscher, Mastiff types (like the Fila, Dogo Argentino, Dogue De Bordeau).Whatever you choose be SURE you can provide this animal with proper exercise and socialization. NO HOME TRAINING if you want an actual "guard" type dog. These dogs aren't hard to ruin...

    • Dogs must be trained to mind, be loyal to the pack leader (that is determine who the pack leader is and understand that it isn't them) and to be good around kids. Most dogs are pretty good watch dogs, i.e. bark at noises and strangers outside the house but not all. Here is a list of what one Website felt were good watch dogs.http://www.dogluvers.com/dog-breeds-watchdog.html Our dog are pretty good watch dogs. They bark when someone comes to the door. If we were gone and the person gave them enough dog cookies, they would show them where we hind the jewelry and silverware in a heartbeat.

    • A watch dog can be any number of breeds as its job is simply *guard* its human pack by barking to alert its owner that there is something out of the norm that they should check out. Breeds such as a Doberman, Rottweiler or GSD would also make an effective visual deterrent.A mentally sound dog would stand down & be clear in its head that its the job of its owner to protect the dog & decide who is allowed in the house or on the property. Arbitrary aggression denotes a weak nerved dog that is not under the control of its owner & is not protective behavior.A safe dog is not breed specific. A safe dog is one with a rock solid temperament, strong nerves {no environmental issues} & obedience trained.

    • As Greek said, a Fila Brasiliero is a good one, there are only a handful of molossers better than it at watching/guarding.Id rank the South African Boerboel as #1 (due to it being extremely tolerant of children and small animals!) the Tibetan Mastiff as the number 2 guarding dog you could have.. followed by the Neopolitan Mastiff as #3.Boerboel would be best with kids, is super loyal and will also guard livestock and property very well.. plus is cold and heat tolerant and doesnt drool like most other molosser breeds. If you are interested in these breed, Id HIGHLY recommend you read a few books.Dr. Carl Semecic, Gladiator Dogs.Dr. Carl Semecic- Pit Bulls and Tenacious Guard Dogs. Both are EXCELLENT books and will teach you everything you need to know about what makes an "effective manstopper".
