We have a 5 1/2 mo old Boerboel, (south african mastiff) we have been feeding him Purina Pro Plan for Giant breed, because of the joint issues that giant breeds have. The vet says he is healthy and growing good, but a friend told us that ProPlan uses a lot of fillers and he feeds his mastiff Eukanuba for Large Breed (due to they do not make giant breed formula). We live in south Alabama and some foods I've seen listed on some other answers, I've never heard of. Should we change foods? And what is the best brand of food ?

    • I have my 13 week old bullmastiff on Blue Buffalo large breed puppy and he is doing great.I was told to switch him to adult large breed at 6 months. I am going to verify this at the vet Saturday.Eukanuba is garbage too. Not much better than Purina.

    • I was using nutro max- but my dog didn't like it- now she eats blue buffalo large breed and she loves it- she will just eat the kibble plain w/out any mush mixes- with nutru if I tried that she would turn up her nose and leave**EDit** I have english mastiff:) 7 month old girlCongrats on the puppy:)

    • We have a french mastiff and italian mastiff, both about 6 1/2 months old, and we feed them Canidae. We had them on Nutro but heard a lot of bad things about it so we switched them to Canidae and they've been doing really good on it. You can look on their website to find locations near you that sell it. www.canidae.com

    • I use the Eagle Pack brand for my Boerboel puppy as well. Lots of testing for giant breeds was done on this brand of food. You can check the Greatdanelady.com she has done a lot of testing with her Great Dane's. Although not the same breed they are a giant breed with similar joint issues.

    • Here is a site that will show you which dog foods are the best and the worst. I suggest that you get any one of the dog foods that are top rated. http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/Most of grocery store dog food formulas, like IAMS, Eukanuba, Pedigree, Science Diet, Purina, and etc contain "meat and bone meal" which has been known to contain dead dogs and cats that were euthanized in animal shelters. Their bodies are picked up and bought by the truck load by "rendering plants" , that also pick up road kill, dead live stock, and etc. They are shredded, and boiled. They skim off the fat on the top of the "soup" and collected it and sell it to pet food companies as "animal fat", the rest of the animals' remains are crushed up, dried and sold to dog and cat food companies as meat and bone meal. You can read more about it here.http://www.homevet.com/petcare/foodbook.htmlHere is an article where the owner of a rendering plant talks about it. He says that cremating the dead shelter animals would cause pollution, and that rendering them is good.http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m5072/is_12_26/ai_115041999Here is further information on what you shouldn't see in the ingredients list in your dog's food.http://www.dogfoodproject.com/index.php?page=badingredientsTop rated dog foods like Canidae contain good healthy ingredients. The raw diet , which is also known as the B.A.R.F. diet is also another great option. Here is information on getting started on it.http://www.njboxers.com/faqs.htm
