What would you do if your dog was attacked by another dog?

If you were walking your dog on a leash and an unleashed dog attacked yours, what would you do to stop the fight without getting hurt yourself? What can be done to separate them with the least amount of damage done to both dogs?

    • I'm fairly certain that my dogs would hold my own, especially because they would turn into pack mentality (all 3 against one? not a chance) but... In the instance where I thought my dogs were in danger, in any way, I would yank my dogs away by their leash (even if it means choking them) and start kicking the crap out of the dog attacking mine.I'm not worried about the damage done to the offending dog... It's not my problem, especially if it's off leash and out of control.

    • An air horn, pepper spray, or a swift kick to the snout can stop an off leash and aggressive dog from even making contact with your leashed dog.If you walk your dog in an area where this is a risk, carry spray or a sound aversion device. You can also occasionally stop an approaching dog by taking control and literally giving it commands such as "STOP!" and "SIT!". If you have no tools, the STOP isn't working, be prepared to kick it in the nose. Hey, it's a little rough, but nothing is more important than your safety, and that of your dog.

    • I'd shoot him. Seriously. I'm not going to risk the death or severe injury to myself or my dog just because some idiot doesn't want to walk their dog on a leash. 2nd Amendment all the way, join the NRA! Lol.

    • In all honesty a person should never separate a dog fight because of risk of injury to the person. However I know I would step in. My best guess would be to keep your dog under your control and then use your body to block the other dog, if it starts biting you, use necessary force such as kicking. No one wants to hurt an animal but if need be give it a shot in the nose with your shoe, it'll stun the dog but not seriously injure it. The best thing would be to stop the fight before it became a fight, if you see an unleashed dog try to avoid the dog. If you can't get away from it and it appears aggressive yell and make noise to scare it away.

    • Been there, done that. Really, the best thing to do is carry a walking stick and/or pepper spray, though I myself have wished at times that I was carrying my gun around during a few altercations. The first thing you could try to do is get in between your dog and the aggressive dog and yell. Some dogs will back down at this point. If it keeps coming you do everything in your power to protect your dog. I've kicked many dogs and even beaten a few off with sticks to protect my dogs. The welfare of your own dog is your sole responsibility. You cannot risk the safety of your own dog, because of some random dog aggressive beast on a rampage. It's not recommended that you try to break up a dog fight. Chances are that you'll only get hurt in the process. If you must and if there is another capable and willing person around each person could grab the back legs of one dog, quickly walk backwards in a swinging/curved way, release immediately once the two dogs are broken apart. Don't walk straight backwards while holding onto the dog's legs as they can easily twist around and bite you. The curved motion helps prevent that. But seriously, you should try dragging your dog away by the leash and beating off the attacking dog before trying this

    • Well, I *was* hurt when it happened, and I almost lost my dog because of it. I ended up with 42 stitches to the face and my dog had roughly 417 on his neck and shoulders. Had to have reconstructive surgery on his front leg, and suffered severe mental trauma. The best thing you can do is be as loud as possible, draw attention to yourself. Scream, yell, ask someone to dial an emergency number, make sure that people see what is happening.NEVER jerk your dog or the other dog off of each other, you risk ripping skin if the dogs have a tough enough grip on the other. Use the leash of your dog to loop it around the back end of the other dog and lift upward [try not to get bit], the dog will almost always release. Hopefully, by this time, someone has come to your aid.No fight is predictable. Ever. you have to make snap decisions and hope they work in the long run. Avoid going down streets where you know loose dogs roam, and keep Animal Control on speed dial [it saved my life].Never assume anything. My dog is very large, almost 80 pounds of solid muscle. I'd always assumed that Max could hold his own against anything [I've seen him wrestle down 250+ pound Newfoundlands] and this 40 pound Lab mix tore him apart in less than 20 minutes. This mix came out with intent to bite *me*, knocked me over in less than half a second and was at my face. Max got him off, but it was over from there. The lab tore into his shoulder, neck, back leg, chest and face before I could even get into contact with 911. Luckily, neighbors rushed out and beat the dog off of mine with debris in the streets. I wish I had taken pictures of Max's injuries before he was rehabbed and healthy again. We thought we were going to have to euthanize him [Max], but luckily the E-Vet gave him a transfusion and stitched him back up before he lost too much blood.

    • 1--your dog or dogs are on leashes, if an unleased dog attacks them, you do not want to put your hands or feet or legs in to the fight to stop it, you will most likely like PP end up really injured bad as she and her beloved Max was.2--you do not want to jerk or pull back on your dogs leash, your gonna choke your dog or dogs and the attacking dog is gonna have the upper hold on them, they won't be able to defend themselves or you for that matter. do not put yourself between your dog or dogs and the attacking dog, you are gonna get hurt bad.....hit the dog with the bat and mace the dog like crazy....3--when you go for a walk, Mace or Pepper Spray, I carry Mace because some dogs, Pepper Spray is just mouth wash for them, it does not effect some.4--Carry a good rounded piece of wood, get you a miniature bat, drill out the center of the bat from the large end to middle ways, and then lead fill the bat....That is what my hubby made for me, it will stop any dog or any human attack on the spot, do not aim for the head or rump, it will shake them up, but won't wart them off, hit them in the upper chest and on the rib cage every time, this takes the breath out of the dog or a human instantly....trust me it works.....5--be sure to get to the doctor for you if needed and make sure to check your dogs for any injuries that need a vet immediately.6--make sure you are yelling loud and clear, make sure you have witnesses, after it is over, and you and your dogs are okay, make sure to try to find the dogs owner asap, so that they don't have time to dream up a story of why the dog is loose without a collar or leash,.7--again, to not risk you getting injured, do not pull back on your dog or dogs, do not kick, slap with legs, feet or hands, your gonna get torn up......but stop the attack with the bat or mace.....and spray very heavy right into the dogs face, head on, not from the side, it wont work from the side spray.Never walk your dog or dogs without protection for yourself or your dogs.I would never let any dog get the upper hand on me or my dogs, I would fight it off, and the best way is to carry protection on every walk with you, and even in safe neighborhoods, attacks of women and dog attacks are still happening, it is not safe anywhere, so always be alert and on the look out all around you, on dog walks or just you running or walking alone.....And if you know Kung Fu or Karate, use it, I learned mine from a master, I went and saw Kung FU Panda 3 times, I love it, and Mr. Jack Black, Kung Fu Panda himself in the movie, why I watched every move they made in that movie and I could defend myself very well....the only thing, every time I try to do the High Kick, I land on my rump, gotta get some padding till I learn that move LOL devil made me do this...good luck

    • you can't really not say you can't get hurt thats the risk you take for your baby. if some craze animal is coming towards you.. what you can do is carry a jack knife with you and definately a coat even if its warm that way if you see him coming you can always take your jacket off and fight him to the ground in the coat then twist off its neck or poke it in the eyes or choke it. sad but some pit bulls are very agressive. I had a dog come running across the park he wasn't a pit bull but a big dog never the less since i didn't know how he's react i grabbed my dog and put him up over my head my arms extended the dog started j umping over me to get to him then the owner said its oky he won't bite he loves dogs. but i told her to get her F*(U dog down before she'd have no dog she got the hint. my little guy was to small fr this big breed

    • It's happened to me twice, and it is just so quick that you don't have a lot of time to react, both times I only managed to kick the other dog once, they are so damn quick that they jump out the way when they see you again. We can not purchase pepper spray in australia, so that just leaves a stick. In australia it is also against the law to walk the streets carrying a baseball bat if you intend to use it for violence, so if police stop you and you don't have a reason to have it you can be charged.

    • I'd suggest that WhiteFoxNinja has A LOT more training to do if s/he wishes to be a "dog specialist" (whatever that means).=============I've been in a similar situation. About 8 or 9 years ago, 2 dogs attacked mine whilst I was walking him. I dived on the larger of the 2 dogs and hit it as hard as I could, repeatedly before it made contact with my dog. There's a time period in which I honestly don't know what happened, panic took over. Long story short, I had a few cuts, the clothes I was wearing were torn but I was not seriously hurt and nor was my dog.I count myself very, very lucky. The dog I launched at was a GSD, and (although I'm a fairly large male, and was in my early 20s at the time) it was easily powerful enough to do me some serious damage. I can only guess that it wasn't as determined to fight as it could have been.If it happened again - I have to be honest and say that instinct would again take over. It's quite likely that picking the dog up by the rear would be an option I'd consider (albeit in the heat of the moment), and I usually wear steel toecapped boots as a matter of course, so my first kick will generally count. I hope though, that I never have to have an experience like that again.
