    • You might try a timer or alarm that goes off when meds are needed. Give the dog a treat and work your way up to giving treats when they follow you to the bottle. Some dogs can be trained to retrieve the bottles. You get really lucky if the dog learns to tell by smell when the person actually needs the meds ie. insulin. There are also special schools that will train the dogs. Check out the delta society to find them in your state.

    • Medical service dogs usually arent trained by their owners. They are usually young dogs adopted from a shelter or bred for that purpose. A company trains them for months and months, and only if they complete the program perfectly are they found homes with disabled people.

    • There are two aspects of training a service dog. The first is public access, training the dog to behave anywhere you take it. You can do this yourself. The other part is training the dog to tell you when you need to take medication. It is difficult to train the dog yourself because the dog needs to be trained to respond to changes in a person's smell. For example, if a diabetic's blood sugar level goes too low, a type of chemical called keytones is metabolized, and a dog can smell this. You would need access to the chemicals, or to whatever else the dog cues on to know you need your medication. Some types of service dogs, like hearing dogs or mobility assistance dogs are easier for the owner to train.
