Are dogs the species with the most varieties?

Dogs come in all shapes and sizes - chihuahua to Great Dane. For example, there are not hundreds of different shape and size giraffes. Why dogs are all considered dogs and not split up into sub-species?

No. There are thousands of varieties of birds, fish and insects.

dogs are split up to sub species there are actually 147 types of dogs that is mixed breed new breeds ect if you would take the time you woukld find many different types of dogs

I do not believe so. There are alot more species of fish than dogs.

Because those are called "breeds!" diffrent types of dogs. Like there is different types of cats, birds, fish, bugs, the list could on for a bit.

I mean, its not like were gonna say "hey! what a beautiful Canis familiaris!".On the contrary, when we see a snake or a monkey or an insect or frog in the wild or on the discovery channel we think "I wonder what kind of monkey that is".and besides, Im sure there are more species of Fish and insect than there are Dogs.Dogs are higher up in the food chain meaning there are less of them. Those lower in the chain are in great abundance and in turn, many varieties.

The thing with the most species is spiders.They have the most types.

insects are number one, then birds, then fish. then rodents. Dogs are way down the ladder

Because they all share one common ancestor, and their dna is the reason they can come in so many different varieties.there are over 500 breeds, not counting the mutts, that are recognized the world over.because a purebred dog can breed successfully with another type of purebreed, or mutt, or even a wolf, they are not counted as subspecies. except the wolf hybrid, is separated, as is the wolf. they are related, but different branch of the family tree.

Saying that birds and fish has loads of varieties is plain silly. What they meant was like saying how many types of goldfish is their? or how many types of cockateils or rabbits is there etc! Yes dogs are 1 type of animal with the most variation.
