There are a few reasons I would not free feed, but I am not totally against it either if it works for someone else. The reasons I like to feed on a schedule besides the obvious reasons of obesity and such, are #1, my dogs are a breed that are prone to bloat so it's a good idea to limit food intake so they don't eat too much at once and also they need to not run around after eating. If they are eating whenever they want, how do I know when to limit exercise? #2, if a dog gets sick, not eating is often the first sign of this. If you are free feeding, you often don't notice it until the illness has progressed further. #3, dogs are pack animals and the leader of the pack controls the resources, so feeding times in which I control how much food they get, when they get it, etc, is a peaceful, non-confrontational way for me to enforce my role as leader. If it works for you, then great. But I believe there are far more benefits in scheduled feedings.
Why is everyone so against free feeding dogs?
I have two dogs (male (60 pounds) and female (50 pounds) and they...-maintain their own weight-have never displayed food aggression-share the same large bowl of food and waterand it just seems so much more humane...whats the harm in it, it seems like…Why is everyone so against free feeding dogs?
