How can i have a kitten and a dog?

i have a dog, he is 4 years old. he's a beagle. he tries to sniff my other cat that rarely ever comes inside. my cat tries to attack it sometimes but sometimes just runs away. how can i have a new kitten and my beagle without conflict?
