Right now, I have two five week old rabbits. They drink from the bottle for half their meals and eat solids like romaine and tomatoes for the other half. I want to teach them to use a litter box so that they are not constanly cooped up in their pet…

I want to teach them to use a litter box so that they are not constanly cooped up in their pet taxi, but I'm afraid they still may be too young. What is a good age to begin training them, and once they are at a good age, how do I train them to use it?

    • put a litter box in their cageit has to be low enough for them to get intoeach time you see them going put them thereso you have to hang around right after feed & water timeright now they are too youngbut start soonwhen they are fully weened is a good time as I rememberrabbits are a clean animalto begin with

    • I think the earliest is the best to train them how to use a litter box. Also spay or neutering your pet helps with training as well. Here is some info on training.

    • at about 8 weeks put boxes with bunny friendly litter in their cage(s) or around the housepick up some of their pellets and put them in the boxes on top of the litter and clean up all others.you need to atart with several boxes and get rid of them as they become pros at using them. If you start out with too few they will take alot longer to get the hint. my bunny took about 6 weeks to get trained well

    • I don't think rabbits can be too young to start using a litter box. Place the box in a corner they like to use and fill it with wood stove pellets and timothy hay. They will munch the hay and go at the same time. It's like reading while on the toilet. Check out this website for more information.

    • I've written a short article on how to toilet train bunns - http://au.geocities.com/leaswebsite/bunnyhouserabbits.html#toiletAs I say in my article, do they make little piles of droppings? These are the places where you need to put a litter tray, so that they'll learn to go on the tray. You'll probably need more than one tray, especially at the beginning. If they're leaving single droppings around the room, always collect them up and put them in the tray(s) - that way they'll get used to the idea that this is where they go. The older rabbits get, the better they become at going to the toilet in the one place. It takes time and patience. Best of luck to you and your bunns!
