Every once in a while I get a slight urine smell coming from the carpet, he's a male and been fixed. He's really good about using his litter box, but just sometimes I smell it in the carpet.

You can go to the pet store and get a little black light. This will show you if there is cat pee on the carpet. It's usually kept around the litter stuff.
Well...you could crawl around on the carpet and find the spot with your nose. Sometimes neutered cats still spray, so maybe check around the baseboards. Also, he might still try to cover it up, so look for claw marks in the carpet. Happy Hunting!!
touch it if it is wet then yes or you could be smelling the litter box, but if the box is too dirty they will not go in it so it could be to dirty for him and he could be going else where
its either past urination that is still embedded in the carpet fibers or he is still doing it without your knowledge. my cat is a male he is also fixed but he will still pee in the corners of my mothers house. its weird but hes a cat...territory is everything to them.
