What can I do to keep my dog calm during a plane trip with me? Are tranquilizers safe?

I have a small dog (under 5 lbs) that I need to take on a 4 hour plane ride. He will be in a carry-on under the seat and I'm not allowed to take him out. He has never been confined for that long and I'm worried that he will bark and whine the entire time.

Try playing with him a lot before you go - try to get him tired go on a walk too. I would also get some good chewy toys like rawhides that will keep him busy.

You can get tranquilizers for him from the vet, it will be better for him in the long run, because he won't get stressed out during the trip. Make sure he has a good meal the night before and then take away all his food so he doesn't have to poop in the cage, same with the water, let him have a little in the morning or about 4 hours before you leave, but no more after that.

DOnt' worry about it, the animal will be in the cago hold, you won't see or hear a thing. Pet him when you arrive, and give um a cookie!

Talk to your vet well ahead of time and get his advice (and a prescription, if you decide to go with it) I had to tranquilize my cat before flying her from Florida to Hawaii, and she made it through it just fine. As with any medication, there is a chance of side effects, so make sure to discuss all your options and the risks involved with your vet. By no means should you try to self-prescribe medication without a vet's say-so.

You can get something called Melatonin. It'll make them sleep. Melatonin is the chemical that bears produce when they need to sleep all winter.

Start getting your dog used to a sherpa bag before you fly. You really didn't say when in the future you will be flying with him. If you have a few weeks to work with him that would be ideal. Also get a window seat, that way if people get in and out of there seats it won't bother him as bad
