How old should a male puppy be before getting fixed?

I have a 12 week old puppy I adopted from the pound and they want to fix him at 14 weeks. Is this to young?

My vet doesn't fix our pets before 5 months.

No 14 weeks is about right. Right around 4-6 months is usually when its done.

don't do it, taking his jewels away is cruel and unusual punishment

from what I understand you should wait until the puppy is six months old

You don't really have to. I mean there are other uses as well.

you should wait until he is about 6 monthes old. that is what i have always been told from the vet.

You should wait until you see that his bones are developing well and observe him of his respiratory pattern. Continue to do this for 2 days. If you see that he is doing well, you can get him fixed. Make sure he isn't too young though, it could scar him.

I know its 6 months to have a female spade. I would think about the same for the male if not 1 year he needs to reach full sexual maturity to gorw correctly. At least that is what would make the most sence too me, I would call the vet and ask before doing this at 14 weks.

Most vets now will do it at 12 to 16 weeks. The earlier you get it done the better. You will eliminate a lot of health and behaviour issues. If you get it done now you dog will most likely never lift the leg to mark anything. You get it done before the testostorone starts producing. I volunteer at an animal rescue and have for almost 9 years now. We get all of our dogs done this early and they come out of the surgery so much better than an older dog and like I said you get rid of a lot of issues you have if you wait longer.
