Can my dog get tapeworms even though hes on Frontline Plus every 30 days?

My dog got tapeworms and I gave him a Droncit pill from the vet last night. My question is, he's on Frontline Plus every 30 days. I thought as long as hes on flea and tick preventative, he will be okay. Or am I wrong? Hes also on Heartgard Plus every 30 days.

Frontline plus just protects against fleas and ticks. It does not prevent tapeworms. Your dog could have eaten an infected flea. Rodents and other small game are also a source of tapeworm infection.

The frontline will help when the flea jumps on him. It will not prevent him from swallowing an infected flea which is what causes the tapeworm. Medication will kill the tapeworm but if he swallows another infected flea the tapeworm problem will reappear. This is a problem that your dog may have many times in his life. You treat when you see the tapeworms. Keep on the Frontline so it will help reduce the frequency that you will see it.
