I am hoping to get a job soon, and I am also considering sometime in the future (within a couple of years) adopting another bird. But I pay for vet checkups myself, as well as bedding and food for my mice and gerbils, which is why I need a job. I will not get another bird unless I can afford vet costs and can save up a couple hundred for emergencies. I know it varies by vets, so an estimate would be nice. I have a green cheek conure.

    • Your vet visits will cost a bit more than your vet visits for your dog or cat. Avian vets are specialists who have studied longer than regular vets, and their prices will reflect that. Prices for well-bird check-ups vary depending on what area of the country you live in, but expect anywhere from $50 to $100. For a brand new bird, your exam might be more thorough, and you should expect to pay upwards of $300 for a new bird exam. You need to factor in the cost of yearly well-bird visits into the cost of your bird, and you should also be prepared for emergency visits, which can be very expensive.

    • In ontario its $100.12 w/tax included, b/c I took mine a couple weeks ago and they said they would take that amount regardless of whether or not it's healthy.but if ur bird is sick and stuff then it will cost more I guess...

    • Yes, it defintely varies with your vet. I only have one avian vet near me and the costs were: $120 for bloodwork, nails and wings were $10, and well visit was $52. I've heard of visits being much higher but this is what my vet charges.

    • I live in Ohio, this is what it cost me when i went to get my 2 birds checked up, but I'll give the price for one bird:Annual wellness exam - $62Gram stain stool / throat - $30Intestinal Parasite Check - $22HTH.

    • You need to ring your local vet and ask them. We can't answer, every answer will be different & depend on where everyone lives. What everyone else has said is only they are either presuming or what it costs in their own area. It may be completely different where you are, so phone your own vet or a few to get some fast & more reliable quotes over the phone. This way at least you will have a better idea of what you will need to save, because you have heard it from your own vet themselves.
