How do you know when a Squirrel has rabies?

My science teacher is keeping a baby squirrel in his classroom and he doesn't want anyone to handle it until we know if it has any diseases. Especially rabies. Can animals inherit rabies from their parents?

    • They don't inherit diseases like rabies from their parents, they catch them. Your science teacher is correct in not allowing you to handle the squirrel for at least 10 days to make sure it doesn't display signs of the disease. The only way, however, to know for sure would require killing it and a lab could examine the brain tissue for evidence of rabies.

    • It is rare for squirrels to be infected with the rabies virus. If the baby squirrel had rabies when it was born than it would be dead.Rabies is transmitted through bites, non-bite exposure and human-to-human transmissionTransmission through bites occur when the saliva of a rabid animal is passed along through a bite.non-bite exposure is when the rabid animal saliva makes contact with open wounds, scratches, cuts, mucous membranes.Human to human is just the same but through organ transplants. So no an animal can not inherit rabies from their parentsthe major thing with squirrels are fleas, ticks, and the plague (which is carried by the fleas)Your Science Teacher should be the only one handling the baby squirrel, how ever he must know that the baby squirrel must not become too dependent on him because than it will not be able to be returned to the wild. He should contact a wildlife center near your school for more information about what to do with the baby squirrel to ensure a safe return to the wild

    • Dark is absolutely correct! your science teacher has no business keeping a baby squirrel in his classroom. it is against the law for him to be in possession of a baby squirrel unless he is a licensed wildlife rehabber. no one should handle the baby, he is right about that, but because it is wildlife and not a pet. the baby squirrel should be turned over to a wildlife rehabber immediately. your teacher should know this already. just when i think i have read everything. sigh. websites to find rehabber below.
