Can you help suggest ways of enticing a dog to eat?

My dog hurt her throat on a bone. She started eating and drinking again after a steroid injection at the vet - she now shows signs of wanting to eat - but seems almost scared to eat in case she hurts herself again. Anyone experience the same with their dog?Penny doesn't eat kibble - she only has chicken, stewing steak and other cooked meats as well as her biscuits. She usually likes to eat some cat food from time to time but she won't even eat that. She does seem quite lively tonight but will be taken her back to teh vet on Monday if she doesn't start eating a little more over the weekend. She has lost so much weight - and she wasn't overweight in the first place.Someone has said she may be enjoying the extra attention. But that isn't the case, she always has lots of attention, she doesn't need to ask for more.

Why not moisten her food for her for a while - you can use warm water, or perhaps chicken broth, whatever she likes to get her to eat a bit.

You may want to start her back on soft foods.Boiled chicken and rice is good to start with.Slowly switch her back to normal food.

I would try very soft, yummy foods like merrick canned foods. It's possible there is some pain yet and the dog needs to take time to heal and forget. If this does not work you may talk to your vet about additives that will cause increased appetitie to get them eating again.

You can try to take her dry food and put some warm water in it and let the food sit for about 5 min to absorb all of the water. Then feed it to her. It should smell extra yummy as well as be softer on her throat. As she realizes that not everything she eats is going to tear up her throat, she should return to her bowl with the same vigor as she used to. Then you can add less and less water and eventually switch back to dry food again.

Get a package of chicken livers, and boil them in quite a bit of water..Pour the hot broth over her kibble to get it really soft..give her ONE liver (1/2 of one, if a toy breed) smashed up, as an appetizer, and then give her the soft kibble while it is warm (not hot)The ol chicken liver trick seldom fails..unless the dog is really, really sick..She shouldn't have more than a liver per day, unless she is a large breed, but she can have the broth untl she is eating well..Don't add any salt or seasonings..

Don't worry! Just relax and get your dog some especially yummy food, like canned food if you normally feed kibble. Your dog will forget the pain as soon as it's tummy starts to growl. The dog could also be stressed over the vet visit and just needs some time to settle down.

Try feeding her soft canned food mixed with her regular dry food. If her throat isn't still irritated try adding a small amount of ketchup to her food, as ketchup added to food once weekly, will also keep her urine from from killing the grass in your yard.

Try persuading it with a favorite treat, if that doesn't work contact a vet. She also could of cut her throat and it hurts her to bad to eat.

POUR SOME BACON OR HAMBURGER GREASE OVER HER FOOD, SHE WILL EAT IT ALL

Don't make a big deal out of the pain issue, chances are she probably doesn't even care anymore, it's just in your head. She will eat if she's hungry. But if you gave her special attention and soft treats or spoon fed her, etc. she might hold out for that special attention again and again.

Oh, that poor dog. Did the vet have you change food? If you're feeding her dry, you might switch to canned just for a while. You could also add warm water to the dry and see if that makes it better for her. Your dog WILL get hungry and have to eat, but you might be able to make it just a little easier.Hope she feels OK soon.

try tuna this is pretty soft my dog hates generic dog food so i take tuna broth and put it on top of it things that taste or smell like meat that are soft also try soft dogfood

Chicken and rice usually seem to entice most dogs into eating. But I would suggest that you speak to your vet if you are worried.

Sounds like her throat is still sore - poor thing. Why not try some very soft buttery mashed potato. Just a little bit every few hours. Then gradually try her on her own food but make sure it is very soft so soak it in chicken stock and just try her with small meals quite often. Hope she's better soon.

you need to hand feed the dog with soft meat once it gets the taste it will begin to eat again
