Did you go through surgery to fix your dog's hip dysplasia?

My Basset Hound has hip dysplasia. My vet says she is the first Basset he's seen with it. She is now 3-4 years old and it has gotten increasingly worse. I feel that she is getting it worse than most dogs might, as she is supposed to support that large amount of weight on short stubby legs and can't always get up. I've been thinking about giving her surgery - either the triple pelvic osteotomy or femoral head excision. I cannot afford hip replacement, so that is out of the question. Has anyone gone through this disease with their dogs? What surgery did you choose for your dog? How did it go? Thanks!!

Maybe if your vet doesn't have good experience, then you should get a second opinion.

Seek a specialist, alot of specialty practices set up a fund for people who cannot afford the surgery. I think Tampa, Florida has such a practise. Whatever option you choose, you will need physical therapy. Its a complicated choice. I think you should do more research and then pray about it. Your help is out there. There are charities out there for people like you who need help, you need to search for them.
